Humber’s Funeral Director Class 1 (Embalming) diploma program draws students from around the world, preparing them to make a difference in the lives of people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. This is the only English-speaking Funeral Service Education program in Ontario.
Courses are designed with industry input, ensuring that what you’re learning is current and relevant. You will learn all aspects of funeral home operation, as well as the practical and theoretical sides of funeral service. Embalming lab courses will prepare you for the technical side of the program, while courses in issues of grief and bereavement prepare you for the emotional side. Courses in arranging, ethics and embalming will enable you to explain all options to families. Business courses will help you understand the challenges and opportunities of operating a business.
Humber also offers a Funeral Director Class 2 (Non-Embalming) program FD221.
The Bereavement Authority of Ontario, the provincial regulator, states that students of the program will complete a one-year before they can be licensed.
To progress into Semester 3, students must start a full-time (paid) field experience in a funeral home after they have successfully completed exams in Semester 2. During Semesters 3 through 5, students complete their full-time learning by distance, and many of their assignments are based on the practical experience they are gaining in the funeral home. Humber assists students in finding field experience by working with industry partners to identify openings. However, students are responsible for finding their own field experience with a licensed Ontario funeral establishment.

Admission Requirements
Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
- Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U or equivalent)
- Three Grade 11 or Grade 12 C, M or U courses in addition to those listed above

Mature Applicants
Diplomas and Certificates
An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet all listed course requirements.
Degrees
An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.
College Transfer Applicants

An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.
Degrees

Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.

International Credit Evaluation
Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a credential evaluation. Note, for international High school education course by course evaluations, ICAS must be used. For international post-secondary education, a WES evaluation must be provided. In situations where you expect to apply for transfer credit, it is recommended that a course by course WES evaluation is completed.

Resume and Letter of Intent
Applicants must submit a current resume and a 300-word letter of intent that describes how they will demonstrate professionalism while working as a funeral director and have a positive impact on the funeral industry.

Questionnaire
The questionnaire is to be completed by the funeral director who supervised your observation or work experience. The observation in a funeral home takes up to 40 hours to complete and applicants are required to arrange their own observation experience.

Class G2 Driver's Licence
To meet work placement requirements in the program, applicants must provide proof of an Ontario G2 Driver's Licence or equivalent.

Lab and Placement Requirements
The pre-requisite requirements must be fulfilled before the commencement of Semester 1 lab. Participation in Semester 1 lab, and subsequent Semester 3 placement, will not be allowed if not all the prerequisite requirements are met.
