Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

Admission selection is based on the following 4 requirements:

  Academic

  To be eligible for admission, you must possess the following:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:
    • Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U or equivalent)
    • Three Grade 11 or Grade 12 C, M or U courses in addition to those listed above

  or

  • Mature student status

  or

  • College or university transfer status

  Mature Applicants

  Diplomas and Certificates

  An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet all listed course requirements.

  Degrees

  An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.

  College Transfer Applicants

  Diplomas and Certificates

  An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

  Degrees

  An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants must have an overall minimum grade point average (GPA) of 65 per cent in the program. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

  University Transfer Applicants

  An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

  Degrees

  An applicant is considered a university transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a university-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or university courses and grades to determine program eligibility. Applicants are required to disclose and provide academic transcripts for all course work completed at the postsecondary level.

  English Language Proficiency

  All applicants whose first language is not English must meet Humber’s English Language Proficiency Policy.

  International Credit Evaluation

  Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a credential evaluation. Note, for international High school education course by course evaluations, ICAS must be used. For international post-secondary education, a WES evaluation must be provided. In situations where you expect to apply for transfer credit, it is recommended that a course by course WES evaluation is completed.

  Online Audition

  All applicants are required to upload an audition video that clearly demonstrates their current performance level on their major instrument. Audition requirements are detailed below. While auditions are assessed on a balance of the technical and song material presented, overall musicality and general ability are also considered as important elements in the selection process.

  Guidelines:

  • The recording must be video with audio (audio-only recordings will not be accepted);
  • The overall sound on the recording should be at a reasonably good quality level and your instrument must be clearly heard throughout the recording;
  • You must be clearly visible on the recording at all times;
  • No editing of the recording is allowed, all material should be recorded in one session;
  • Open the recording with a very short statement on your reasons for wanting to study at Humber and your musical background (roughly 1 minute);
  • The entire audition video should not exceed 20 minutes.

  Video Recording should contain the following:

  Knowledge of Note names on the fingerboard: Play the notes C, F, Bb and Eb on every string.

  Scales: 2 octaves, ascending and descending with good time feel and good tone

  • G, D, A and E major scales
  • D, G, C and F harmonic minor scales
  • E, B, D and G jazz/melodic minor scales

  Triad Arpeggios: 2 octaves, ascending and descending with good time feel and good tone

  • C, F and Bb Major; G, D and A minor; E, B and F# diminished; Eb, Ab and Db augmented

  Chord Voicings: Play multiple inversions of each chord

  • EbMaj7, F#mi7, Bmi7(b5), Ddim7

  I-VI-II-V progressions in the keys of F, Bb, G and D Major:  Play the chords in the progression as four part chords. The progressions must be played with a good time feel and smooth chord connecting. It’s recommended that you familiarize yourself with the concept of walking bass lines with chord changes.

  Improvising: Record three examples of yourself improvising with either a live group or a play along recording. The three tunes should involve different styles, rhythmic feels and tempos. It is strongly advised that you use material drawn from the standard jazz repertoire.

  Chord melody arrangement: You must prepare a chord melody on a standard jazz tune. In a chord melody the melody and accompaniment of the tune are played simultaneously making the guitar a completely self-contained instrument. It is advised that you get assistance from a qualified instructor to prepare this requirement.
