    Online Audition

    All applicants are required to upload an audition video that clearly demonstrates their current performance level on their major instrument. Audition requirements are detailed below. While auditions are assessed on a balance of the technical and song material presented, overall musicality and general ability are also considered as important elements in the selection process.

    Guidelines:

    • The recording must be video with audio (audio-only recordings will not be accepted);
    • The overall sound on the recording should be at a reasonably good quality level and your instrument must be clearly heard throughout the recording;
    • You must be clearly visible on the recording at all times;
    • No editing of the recording is allowed, all material should be recorded in one session;
    • Open the recording with a very short statement on your reasons for wanting to study at Humber and your musical background (roughly 1 minute);
    • The entire audition video should not exceed 20 minutes.

    Video Recording should contain the following:

    Scales: One or two octaves (two octaves recommended) ascending and descending, playing 1/8th notes. Recommended M.M. Quarter note =100: Ab major (Bb for trumpets) played staccato, E major (F# for trpts.) played legato. D harmonic minor (E for trpts.) any style of articulation. F melodic minor (G for trpts.) any style of articulation.

    Chords: One or two octaves arpeggiated ascending and descending: Bb dominant 7 (C for trpts.),Gb major 7 (Ab for trpts.), C minor 7(b5) (D for trpts.), Eb diminished 7 (F for trpts). Recommended M.M. Quarter note = 100

    Range: A high (or low for bass trombonists) range exercise: Perform a favourite range exercise (scales, chords, or harmonics) that shows off your high (or low) range potential.

    Classical Selection: (2 to 4 minutes recommended): A lyrical or technical study, etude, or an excerpt of a concerto. No accompaniment required.

    Two Jazz Standards: Play the melody and one or more choruses of an improvised solo, 2 to 5 minutes for each tune. Suggested repertoire includes medium or up tempo tunes such as Stella By Starlight, Yardbird Suite, Just Friends, Green Dolphin St., Joy Spring, Sonnymoon For Two, I’m Old Fashioned, and slower ballads such as Body and Soul, Summertime, Georgia, Laura, In A Sentimental Mood.

    Your own choice: This selection could be a latin or brazilian tune, another jazz standard, a composition, or anything that shows off your musical interests.

    The three tunes above can have a live rhythm section (or just piano or guitar) accompaniment, or use playalong CD’s such as the Jamey Aebersold CD/Book series. For those who have little jazz improvising experience, do your best, we not only listen to your sound, time, technique, but also your overall potential.
