This intensive, performance-based program helps you to solidify your knowledge of the fundamentals of commercial jazz and to improve your performance skills through improvisation, repertoire development and small group ensemble performance work.
Upon graduation, you will have a clearer understanding of the field and your career potential within it. You'll have developed audition skills and be a stronger candidate for entry into music diploma/degree programs at Canadian colleges and universities.
Applicants must meet all the requirements below in order to meet minimum program eligibility. Meeting minimum eligibility requirements does not guarantee an offer of admission. Admission decisions will be available via MyHumber, or by email and mail. Admission decisions will not be released by phone.

An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or other postsecondary school, and will be 19 or older as of the first day of classes. Humber will invite you for testing to demonstrate that you meet all listed course requirements.
An applicant is considered a mature applicant if they have not completed secondary school or attended postsecondary studies, and will be 21 or older as of the first day of classes. Mature applicants for degree programs will be required to meet course requirements at the U/M level or equivalent.
An applicant is considered a college transfer applicant if they have completed some or all of a college-level credential. Humber may use a combination of secondary school and/or college courses and grades to determine program eligibility.

Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a credential evaluation. Note, for international High school education course by course evaluations, ICAS must be used. For international post-secondary education, a WES evaluation must be provided. In situations where you expect to apply for transfer credit, it is recommended that a course by course WES evaluation is completed.
All applicants are required to upload an audition video that clearly demonstrates their current performance level on their major instrument. Audition requirements are detailed below. While auditions are assessed on a balance of the technical and song material presented, overall musicality and general ability are also considered as important elements in the selection process.

Prepared Pieces: Please have three selections prepared:
A) Autumn Leaves: Play one chorus of melody, one chorus pizzicato bass line and an improvised solo (arco) on the jazz standard Autumn Leaves. It can be in any key.
B) Bach Suite: Play one movement of a Bach Suite for solo cello. It should demonstrate your musicality and instrumental ability.
C) Prepared Piece: Perform any piece of your choosing. It can be a jazz composition or anything that reflects your musical interests/abilities.
Intonation: You will be asked to tune quickly and accurately to a piano. You will also be asked to sing and play back pitches played on a piano.
Scales: Db major 2 octaves, Ab major 2 octaves, B harmonic minor 2 octaves, C melodic minor 2 octaves. All scales are to be played ascending and descending. The recommended minimum tempo is quarter note = 120 (eighth notes). Note that I will be listening for your sense of time, pitch, tone, etc.
Arpeggios: Bb dominant 7, Eb major 7, G augmented triad, D minor 7, Ab minor 7(b5), and F diminished 7. All chords should be one octave, arpeggiated ascending and descending.
