Welcome to Research! This seminar will introduce you to the various paths available in research here at Humber. We will cover a breadth of topics like ‘how to better engage with students’ (the scholarship of teaching and learning or (SoTL)) through to ‘how to engage with industry’ (various Tri-Council grants). The Office of Research and Innovation (ORI) serves as our research hub and includes what supports we provide such as the Scholar’s Café, various communities of practice, the Journal of Innovation in Polytechnic Education (JIPE) and Humber Press. We also offer a buffet of lunch and learn workshops (for example human-centered design, design thinking, creative problem solving, values-based innovation, data storytelling, behavioural economics). In this session, we will overview the key mindsets presented in the Humber Learning Outcomes (HLO) framework: Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI), Sustainability and Systems Thinking. We will define these concepts and discuss how the core values of Humber interconnect with each other and align with Indigenous Ways of Being, Knowing and Doing. We will also offer practical applications and tools such as the impact gap canvas, the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Humber’s Sustainability Plan, which help faculty operationalize these mindsets to tackle real-world problems, promote inclusive teaching approaches, and foster belonging in the Humber classroom and beyond.
