Communities all over North America are grappling with questions about anti-Blackness and the way that it manifests in policing. After years of attempts at reform, Black people are still being targeted for arrest, surveillance, use of force and lethal force from police officers. Indigenous communities face similar injustices at the hands of police. These facts, combined with statistics that show that police tend not to do a very good job at addressing society’s safety needs, generate some fundamental questions about what sorts of services our society needs. In this talk, Sandy Hudson will discuss why activists have decided that the only way forward is to defund the police, and how we can create services that truly address our safety needs.
