TORONTO, ONTARIO – Humber and LocoMobi World Inc. received funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) to build an autonomous robot programmed to perform tasks for security and parking applications.
The grant, totaling $40,000 for one year, will support the development of a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) for Mobi 2.0. Humber faculty and students will have the opportunity to work on the next generation of an advanced robot for the enforcement and security sector and gain hands-on learning experience that will benefit students in their future careers.
“This partnership builds on the work already taking place at Humber and continues the tradition of using the latest technologies in a resource-rich environment to foster innovation, creative, solutions-based thinking, and support that businesses need to embrace technological progress, respond to new markets, and be globally competitive." says Neal Mohammed, director of Humber’s Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation (Barrett CTI). “This award is another great testament to the hard work of the students and the research team working with industry partner LocoMobi World to solve their innovation challenge.”
LocoMobi World is recognized as a leader in transportation infrastructure. Mobi, their advanced robot, was designed for the enforcement and security of infrastructure, including law enforcement for citations and parking enforcement for cities and private operations. Mobi can also patrol streets and parking garages, monitor congestion, and assist pedestrians with interactive AI-driven voice capabilities. This collaboration involves participation in several government initiatives supporting SME development in Canada.
“We are revolutionizing the use of autonomous robots with the vision of Canada being a hotspot for innovation using specialized robots to manage our infrastructure. This was an idea and dream I had 20 years ago, and now we are here,” said Grant Furlane, founder and CEO of LocoMobi World Inc.
Since October 2023, LocoMobi World has partnered with Humber and its’ Barrett CTI. Located in north Etobicoke, this 93,000-square-foot facility is a powerhouse of technological innovation, leveraging Humber’s proven leadership in areas such as automation and robotics, systems integration, design, augmented and virtual realities, and user experience testing.
