TORONTO, ONTARIO – Representing Humber Polytechnic on the global stage, Paxton Coughlin and Dillon Kong received a Medallion for Excellence at this year’s WorldSkills Competition in Lyon, France. Paxton, who is currently enrolled in the Electromechanical Engineering Technology program, and Dillon, a recent graduate of the same program, showcased their skills in the Mechatronics division.

Humber has a strong history in the Mechatronics division and is the only post-secondary institution in North America to win a medal in this category at WorldSkills International.

"Paxton and Dillon’s success is a shining example of how Humber Polytechnic programs focus on equipping students with the practical skills that enhance employability and set them apart in the competitive workforce,” said Ann Marie Vaughan, president and CEO of Humber Polytechnic. “We are incredibly proud of Paxton and Dillon’s achievement and thrilled knowing that their journey will inspire future generations of students to pursue their goals with determination and excellence.”

Mechatronics involves the integration of mechanics, electronics, pneumatics, and computer technology to build automated systems for industry. Paxton and Dillon's journey to Lyon began at Humber, where they won first place at the Humber, provincial, and national levels. The pair trained 40 hours a week for WorldSkills with the support of the Advanced Manufacturing Skills Consortium at Humber’s Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation after qualifying through Skills Canada.

As part of Humber’s vision, Building Brilliance, Humber works closely with industry partners to deliver unparalleled student experiences, bridging the gap between academia and real-world application.

Humber teams have a history of success at WorldSkills competitions, with previous wins including gold at WorldSkills Americas in Brazil and bronze at WorldSkills International when it was held in Abu Dhabi. Additionally, Humber earned a bronze medal in the Pâtisserie and Confectionary division at the 2022 WorldSkills Competition Special Edition.
