TORONTO, ONTARIO – Two Humber College graduates were awarded with 2023 Premier’s Awards in the Business and Health Sciences categories. This is the seventh year in a row that at least one Humber graduate has won this prestigious award.

Carrie Baker, President of Canada Goose, and Michael Sanderson, Chief of Hamilton Paramedic Service, were recognized for their accomplishments at the Higher Education Summit Premier’s Awards gala held on November 27.

“Carrie Baker and Michael Sanderson are pioneers in their fields,” says Ann Marie Vaughan, president and CEO of Humber College. “Their outstanding achievements in business and health are incredible examples of the groundbreaking work and leadership of Humber’s alumni in various industries, in our local communities, across Canada and internationally.”

Carrie Baker, a graduate of Humber’s Public Relations program (2000), oversees Canada Goose’s commercial business and brand, driving its global growth. A creative communications strategist with a passion for breaking boundaries, she was instrumental in transforming the outerwear manufacturer founded in 1957 to an iconic Canadian luxury brand, recognized worldwide. Baker played a pivotal role in establishing Canada Goose’s communications strategy, helping to lead its IPO in 2017 and creating its industry-leading Sustainable Impact Strategy. In 2019, she was named WXN Top 100 Most Powerful Women in Canada and one of Canada’s 50 Best Executives by The Globe and Mail in 2020.

“Humber College is part of the foundation to turn my skills and passions into a vision and purpose – this honour is a testament to that,” said Baker. “Thank you to Humber College for setting me on a path that has allowed me to inspire, educate, entertain and motivate others through the power of great stories.”

Michael Sanderson, Chief of Hamilton Paramedic Service, is a graduate of Humber’s Ambulance and Emergency Care Program (1977). Sanderson oversees 440 staff and ensures a high level of clinical, operational, and financial performance within the tenth largest city in Canada. In his fifth decade in Emergency Medical Services, Michael Sanderson has been a paramedic, educator, and leader at local, provincial, national, and international levels. While Executive Director at BC Ambulance, he led all EMS activities for the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. Continuously giving back to his sector, Michael has served on Provincial and National Boards and is the President of the Ontario Association of Paramedic Chiefs.

“As a proud alumnus of Humber College’s Ambulance and Emergency Care program, I credit the institution for providing me the foundational skills needed to shape my journey in the field of emergency services,” said Sanderson. “I feel a profound sense of pride when giving back to my community and education is a steppingstone to creating those meaningful contributions."

The Premier’s Awards celebrate the achievements and contributions of Ontario college graduates in the province and around the world. Humber graduates were nominated in seven categories: Kenneth Fowler in Apprenticeship, Carrie Baker in Business, Deepa Mattoo in Community Services, Matthew Burnett in Creative Arts and Design, Michael Sanderson in Health Sciences, Anna Simone in Technology and Lisa Post in Recent Graduate.
