You’ve aced your exams, now it’s time to ace your interview.
Whether you’re looking for a part-time job or a full-time position in your field of study, Humber’s Academic and Career Success Centre has the tools you need to prepare for a successful interview.
Here are six tips to help you stand out in your interview:
1. Preparation is key
Research the company and the industry you are interviewing with. Look at your skills and experiences and match them to the job posting.
2. Dress to impress
Your dress attire will already make an impression before you begin your formal interview. Dress in a manner that is professionally appropriate to the position for which you are applying. In most cases, this means wearing a blazer, suit and avoid bright colours.
3. Show and tell
Showcase your work and accomplishments. Make sure to bring extra resumes, a portfolio or work samples, references, transcripts, or any other relevant documents related to your profession.
4. Answer with confidence
One of the many questions you may be asked in an interview is: “Describe a time you showed leadership and teamwork?” Here are many more questions you can start gathering ideas for: http://careers.humber.ca/docs/interview/Successful-Interview-July-2016.pdf
5. Ask questions
This shows your future employer you are interested in learning more about the position and fulfilling the company’s role. See a full list of questions your employers will be happy to answer: http://careers.humber.ca/docs/interview/Successful-Interview-July-2016.pdf
Be sure to send a thank you email within 24 hours and personalize the content. If you have yet to hear from your future employer after they have allocated a number of days or weeks to hear a response, take the initiative to call or email the employer regarding the status of your interview to express interest in the position.
