Three Humber students are shining the spotlight on those who went above and beyond for them: their greatest high school teachers.
Alyson Condron, Macklyn Beauchesne and Ranjit Saini honoured those high school teachers at the Humber Room recently during a ceremony with family, friends and the Humber community.
“I will never forget how she helped me see the truth in who I am,” said Condron, a Fashion Arts and Business student, about her high school English teacher, Tanya Ventura, from Holy Trinity Catholic High School in Oakville. “She showed me I can overcome any obstacles in life.”
Funeral Services student Macklyn Beauchesne’s chemistry teacher, Nichole Jun-Biswas, from Vincent Massey Secondary School in Windsor, helped her get through a painful experience during her time in high school.
“She was more than a teacher,” said Beauchesne. “She was a friend, someone I could talk to, and someone I could count on.”
Bachelor of Child and Youth Care student, Ranjit Saini, credits her culinary arts teacher, Keith Hoare from Thisletown Collegiate Institute in Etobicoke, for creating an environment that enabled her success.
“Mr. Hoare would always make me smile when I entered the kitchen,” she explained. “The skills he taught me put my life into perspective and made me realize what I was capable of.”
The Greatest High School Teacher contest is sponsored by the Office of the Senior Vice-President Academic. Students enter by writing essays about the teachers they’ve nominated. Students with the winning entries receive a $500 bookstore gift certificate, while their respective high school receives a one-year tuition scholarship to be granted to a graduating student who attends Humber the following academic year.
