It’s not a huge surprise to hear the Humber Polytechnic community is out in the world and doing great things.
Whether it’s faculty, staff, students or one of Humber’s more than 310,000 graduates, the Humber community is leaving its mark on the world.
Here are just a few stories from 2024 that highlight the brilliant impact those who work and learn at Humber are making.
Humber alumnus named to the Order of Canada
Humber alumnus Mark Cameron, who graduated from Humber’s Primary Care Paramedic program in 1989, was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada. Cameron is the co-founder and co-president of the Canadian International Medical Relief Organization, an organization that provides medical supplies and training for medical teams worldwide including in Syria.
Humber grad and media personality wins 2024 Premier’s Award
Humber alumnus George Stroumboulopoulos, a globally renowned Canadian media personality, broadcaster and humanitarian who's synonymous with creative arts and entertainment, received a 2024 Premier’s Award in the Creative Arts and Design category. The annual awards are given to graduates from colleges across the province in recognition of their outstanding accomplishments. Stroumboulopoulos graduated from Humber’s Broadcasting – Radio program in 1993 and also belongs to the Radio Humber Hall of Fame.
Cooking up something special at the National Home Show
Humber students, faculty and alumni showed off their skills while giving the audience at the National Home Show a taste of the sumptuous delights they can create in the kitchen. Adam Lafleur, a Humber alumnus and chef de cuisine at Toronto restaurant Constantine who was named as one of Kostuch Media’s 2023 Top 30-Under-30 award winners, led an hour-long demonstration at the show.
Marcus Morgan is himself – on and off the court
Marcus Morgan is a star student athlete with the Humber Hawks men’s volleyball team who’s enrolled in the Cosmetic Management program. Morgan is coming off an impressive season in which the Hawks won their fourth consecutive Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) championship. Morgan was named the Player of the Game of the OCAA championship with a game high 21 points and 10 digs. He was also named to the all-star tournament team and was the MVP of the tournament.
First he won at Humber. Then he won the nationals
Humber Research Analyst student Chandra (Nat) Limiarja went from being a first-time participant in the Map the System challenge to a national champion in short order. Earlier this year, Limiarja won first place in Humber’s Map the System competition for the presentation Breaking the Cycle of Hate: A Systems Analysis of Anti-LGBTQ Sentiment in Indonesia. Limiarja then finished first at Map the System Canada.
Excellence on display at WorldSkills
Humber’s Paxton Coghlin and Dillon Kong were awarded a Medallion for Excellence at the WorldSkills Competition. The two were competing in the Mechatronics division at the international competition held in Lyon, France. This was the fourth time Humber has sent competitors to WorldSkills.
Fourth film by Humber prof screens theatrically across Canada
Bachelor of Film and Media Production professor Kazik Radwanski premiered his most recent film, Matt and Mara, at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year. The film went on to have its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
Passion for volunteerism burns bright
Early Childhood Education student Bianca Salvo is enjoying what she’s learning at Humber and has been busy volunteering her time on various fronts including with the Office of Sustainability, First Year Experience and Transition to Success.
