It’s not a huge surprise to hear the Humber College community is excelling.  

Whether it’s faculty, staff, students or one of the College’s more than 300,000 graduates, the Humber community is leaving its mark on the world.

Here are just a few stories from 2023 that highlight just how special those who work and study at Humber truly are.

Humber College alumna embraces the challenge of playing Mejal in the Academy Award-nominated film Women Talking
Acting for Film and Television graduate Michelle McLeod starred as Mejal in the Academy Award-nominated film Women Talking. The Sarah Polley-directed film that’s based on the acclaimed 2018 novel by Miriam Toews was nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, winning the latter.

Culinary Management graduate Rob Yu named Top 30-Under-30 award winner
It was exciting news when it was revealed that Humber alumnus Rob Yu was named as one of Kostuch Media’s 2023 Top 30-Under-30 award winners. However, he wasn’t the only one as also included on this year’s list were Humber graduates Anthony Marchisello and Adam Lafleur. The awards annually recognize the foodservice-and-hospitality industry’s top young professionals.

Humber student returns from Special Olympics World Games with bronze medal
Developmental Service Worker student Natasha Stasiuk made the whole Humber community proud when she returned home from the Special Olympics World Games in Berlin with a bronze medal in golf. Earlier this year, the Oakville resident was named the winner of the 8th annual Jeffrey Reed Courage Award.

Humber College program advisor recognized with Everyday Heroes award
Brenda Ridley, a Humber program advisor in the Faculty of Health Sciences and Wellness, received an award in recognition of her efforts to help train more than 200 nurses during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Ridley, who is also an instructor for High Acuity, Critical Care and Emergency Nursing post-graduate programs at Humber, was one of just six winners of the Everyday Heroes award as part of the 2021-22 Minister of Colleges and Universities' Awards of Excellence. Ridley was honoured during a ceremony in February.  

Humber College alumna’s design selected out of hundreds of submissions for Down Syndrome International campaign
Community Integration Through Co-operative Education program graduate Jessica Rotolo submitted the winning design for the annual #LotsOfSocks Campaign. The Down Syndrome International campaign raises awareness about Down syndrome and gets people talking on World Down Syndrome Day. Rotolo’s submission was selected out of hundreds of entries.

Inspiring Canadians receive honorary degrees from Humber College
Humber College bestowed eight honorary degrees to deserving recipients as part of the Spring 2023 Convocation ceremonies. Each of the recipients is an inspiring Canadian who has made their mark in the fields of business, arts and culture, and education. The recipients include Sara Diamond, Michael Linklater, Anthony Longo, Lana Payne, Andrew Monkhouse, Chantal Kreviazuk, James Estill and Elder Albert Marshall.
