Humber is honouring the identities and self-expression of the two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual members of the community throughout the month of June as part of Pride 2024.
Humber’s theme for Pride 2024 is “You Belong Here.” Amid growing curbs on the freedoms of 2SLGBTQIA+ people in North America and around the world, it’s critical that the Humber community intentionally makes space for the celebration of queer life.
Pride Month is not just about celebrating achievements but also about actively creating spaces of belonging where everyone feels welcome and valued. This year’s theme highlights the importance of creating such spaces within Humber and beyond.
The Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging in partnership with the LGBTQ+ Resource Centre and the 2SLGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group are celebrating Pride Month and have organized a series of events throughout the month.
It starts on June 3 with an opening ceremony and the raising of the Pride and Trans flags at North and Lakeshore campuses. The event at North Campus happens at 11:30 a.m. at the flagpole followed by a mix and mingle taking place from noon to 1 p.m. in the Learning Resource Commons lobby. At Lakeshore Campus, it happens at 11:30 a.m. at the flagpole followed by a mix and mingle from noon to 1 p.m. in WEL 201. The International Graduate School will have a live stream at 11:30 a.m. on the fourth floor of the Learning Commons.
Pride in the Park happens on June 6. It’s an afternoon picnic at Christie Pits Park that runs from noon to 3 p.m.
The Trans March as part of Pride Toronto happens June 28. The Dyke March as part of Pride Toronto happens June 29. The Pride Parade as part of Pride Toronto happens June 30. LGBTQ+ Resource Centre staff will attend these events.
The Humber community is encouraged to take the opportunity to march in the Pride Parade with the LGBTQ+ Resource Centre. Register here to join Humber at the Pride Parade.
The Library and Humber Archives is hosting a series of free movie screenings for Pride Month. They are The Wizard of Oz (1939), a classic film starring gay icon Judy Garland, Unfolding the Butterfly (2000), a documentary on former Humber professor and author of The Jade Peony, Wayson Choy, and Wildhood (2021), a film directed by Bretten Hannam about a Mi’kmaw teenager’s journey of self-discovery.
More information on 2SLGBTQIA+ identities, terminology, and issues for the curious, questioning, teachers and allies can be found in the 2SLGBTQ+ Education Guide.
