It’s been a busy and successful 2024 for Humber Polytechnic.
Many projects were completed, initiatives undertaken, milestones achieved, and awards received. With the new year almost upon us, here’s a look back on some of the memorable stories that happened at Humber in 2024.
A New Era Begins: Humber College Transforms into Humber Polytechnic
In late August 2023, Humber set out on an ambitious journey to redefine itself and what post-secondary education could look like in 2030 and beyond. This journey included discussions with more than a thousand people, including students, staff and industry and community partners, on Humber’s future and its purpose in society. A year later, the first step of that future was realized with the announcement of the transformation from Humber College to Humber Polytechnic and its new brand, Builders of Brilliance.
Humber Offers Indigenous Students Free Tuition
Humber broke new ground in its ongoing support for Indigenous students by being the first college in the country to offer free tuition to students from eight First Nations communities. Support for Humber’s Indigenous community through initiatives such as the Indigenous Tuition Grant program is a central component of Indigenous Education Plan strategy and core to Humber Inspired.
Humber Ranked Fifth in Canada in Annual Top Research Ranking
Humber has long been recognized as an innovative applied research institution through its many partnerships and collaborations with industry. In recognition of this leadership, Humber was named the top applied research institution in the Greater Toronto Area, according to Canada's Top 50 Research Colleges compiled by Research Infosource. In the annual list, Humber moved up 10 spots in its national ranking from the previous year coming fifth in 2024 and was also recognized as being first in research income growth in Canada.
Canada’s Greenest Employers Designation Received Nine Years and Counting
It takes a lot of work to stay evergreen and the Humber community continuously advances on its commitment to sustainability. Humber’s sustained efforts and accomplishments were recognized by being named one of Canada's Greenest Employers for the ninth year in a row by MediaCorp Canada. The designation recognizes employers who are leading the nation in creating a culture of environmental awareness in their organizations and who have developed exceptional sustainability initiatives.
Humber Hawks Take Flight with Top National Athletics Program Recognition
To celebrate 50 years of excellence in collegiate athletics, the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) recognized its top teams with banner presentations. Humber Athletics was honoured as the top collegiate program in the CCAA over the last half-century based on the cumulative achievements of the varsity programs in each CCAA sport from 1974 through 2024. The CCAA committee ranked the top 10 institutions in 11 sports since 1974 in its "Supremacy" series and Humber was recognized in ten sports — including three first-overall selections in men's soccer, men's basketball and golf.
Students and Industry Benefit from Centre for Skilled Trades and Technology Expansion
Humber is meeting the needs of the changing and in-demand skilled trades industry with the expansion and renovation of the Centre for Skilled Trades and Technology. The $9.5 million expansion added 500 skilled trades training opportunities for pre-apprenticeship, apprenticeship and post-secondary students along with improved quality of education and facility upgrades. Humber equipped the expansion with a heating, refrigeration and air conditioning lab as well as a gas and oil lab, an AR/VR/XR simulation studio, a heat plant, study spaces, a remote studio and collaboration pods, plus more.
