In honour of Pride month, Humber College raised the Pride and Trans flags at its campuses on Tuesday. 

They were raised in recognition of the oppression gender diverse and 2SLGBTQ+ individuals continue to face and Humber’s commitment to change. 

Prior to the event, on May 27, the remains of 215 children were discovered at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in Kamloops, British Columbia. It serves as a vivid and heartbreaking reminder of the ongoing legacy and ripple effects of the residential school system in Canada. 

When the Pride and Trans flags hit the top of the poles, they were immediately lowered to continue to honour the lives lost and affected due to residential schools.  
 
The flag raising ceremony was held virtually this year with remarks from individuals from the LGBTQ+ Resource Centre, the BASE, IGNITE and the 2SLGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group. 

Attendees also heard from students who outlined their own lived experience. 

The 2SLGBTQ+ ERG and the LGBTQ+ Resource Centre will be hosting several events throughout the month, including a literary panel and a speakers series. The Humber community is encouraged to display their pride all month long.
