TORONTO, ONTARIO – Humber's Creative Writing graduate certificate student Lynda Boshcoff was awarded a $1,500 scholarship from the Assembly Hall’s By the Lake Book Club. The scholarship is presented annually to a student in the program who self-identifies as Indigenous, Black or African and demonstrates financial need.
Lynda Boshcoff has been a life-long writer. She is a high school English teacher in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and after many years teaching the Writer’s Craft, she felt inspired to write a play about the life of William Shakespeare. The play, All the World’s a Stage, is one that Boshcoff wishes she could have shared with her own students. Having taken some time off from teaching to battle cancer, Boshcoff is focusing on healing and pursuing her life-long dream at the Humber School for Writers.
“I’m truly appreciative of the scholarship. This financial help will give me the opportunity to invest in a new laptop to give me the opportunity to write on the go and increase how much I can write,” said Boshcoff. “This award has made me more confident, and it motivates me to keep working hard to better myself.”
Founded in 2019, the By The Lake Book Club Scholarship is an extension of the long-term partnership between the School for Writers and the Assembly Hall that has produced By the Lake Book Club (BTLBC) events since 2009. With six monthly Tuesday evening events from September to April, BTLBC features author readings, moderated discussions, question-and-answer sessions and book signings in the heart of the Lakeshore community. The next BTLBC event runs November 9 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and features Kim Thúy in conversation with Alissa York.
