Anthony Marchisello is a self-professed people person.

Growing up in an Italian family, he was always surrounded by gregarious loved ones at their frequent family gatherings where hosting and providing a meal was the central focus. Marchisello developed a love for food, sharing his passion and delivering hospitality to others from a young age because of his family, many of whom worked in restaurants and hotels.  

“A big part of Italian culture is gathering to eat together, to share and to enjoy, and this is also the aim in the hospitality industry, which makes each day at work feel like home for me,” said Marchisello, who’s currently the lobby manager at the front desk of the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. “I’m such a people person and my biggest pleasure is taking care of others and making sure they have special experiences. In this industry we get to turn moments into memories. It’s what makes me fall in love with hospitality each day.”

Marchisello, who graduated from Humber College’s Hospitality – Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management and the Bachelor of Commerce – Hospitality and Tourism Management programs, has been named as one of Kostuch Media’s 2023 Top 30-Under-30 award winners.   

At 24, he made the list and said he’s the youngest recipient of the group.

Also included in this year’s awards are Humber graduates Rob Yu and Adam Lafleur. Last year, Humber alumna Liezle Espejo was named as one of the 2022 award winners.  

‘Deserving of the recognition’

“It means a lot to be recognized for the work that I've done that made an impact,” said Marchisello. “This is my first large accomplishment and I hope it will be just the first of many. It really helps to validate all the hard work that I’ve done so far in my career, and I hope it will help me build on that.”

Hospitality – Hotel and Restaurant Operations Management Professor and Program Coordinator Kristy Adams said Marchisello was a dedicated and engaged learner who stood out. Adams was the one who nominated him for the award.

“Anthony embodies and showcases everything that a hospitality professional should be,” said Adams. “He’s professional, positive, customer-centred and is always thinking about the guest. He was certainly deserving of the recognition.”

Adams said Marchisello made the Dean’s List each semester at Humber. In his final semester, Adams picked Marchisello from a class of more than 100 students to work on a utilization and implementation capstone project for a hotel in the Barrett Centre for Technology Innovation at North Campus.

“Tireless hours were devoted to school, work, and this additional project. And, as always, Anthony rose to all occasions,” wrote Adams in a letter supporting his nomination.

Career journey takes him to Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel

Marchisello worked full-time throughout his studies at Humber. It wasn’t always easy, but his time spent as an assistant manager at both Moxies and Chop Steakhouse and Bar helped him learn more about the industry. He worked his way up to a regional role with Moxies as the senior training and development manager before moving to his new position in Banff in June.  

He had an internship at the Fairmont Banff Springs last year and thoroughly enjoyed learning how operations work at a busy hotel with almost 800 rooms. He has built a strong background in the food and beverage side of the industry and is now expanding his skills by learning about hotel operations to help him to understand all aspects of the hospitality industry.  

His future career goal is to become a department director within a luxury property.
