Across our digital and physical campuses, our sense of community and of shared purpose remains strong. We are focused on our students and providing the best possible experiences inside and outside of the classroom.

Programs and courses will be delivered in the winter term in the way they will continue to be offered going forward. This means that there will be significantly more in-person course offerings. Some courses will have in-person as well as online options. 

Services and supports will be offered on campus and many will continue to have online options to provide greater flexibility to students.

In addition to a strong set of health and safety measures, Humber's COVID-19 vaccination policy remains in place. You can find out more information about the new policy here.

We are committed to keeping our students and employees connected and informed. Our Return to Campus microsite, FAQ and COVID-19 Reporting pages will continue to be updated to provide key resources and information about college initiatives and what to expect when coming to campus.

Winter 2022 Update - November 12, 2021

The following message was sent to students on November 12, 2021.

Dear Humber Students:

With registration for Winter 2022 courses opening on November 22nd, we want to update you on course delivery plans and how we are responding to student concerns that have been shared by some students about the increase to the number of in-person classes and labs from Fall to Winter.

Throughout the pandemic, Humber provided hands-on education while adhering to, and often exceeding, public health and government directives. Each semester throughout the pandemic, we have gradually increased the number of students studying in-person. We currently have 15,000 students registered to attend class in-person weekly across all our locations, and there have been no reported cases of transmission on campus since the beginning of the fall term. We have a mandatory vaccination policy in place and that will continue to be the case for the Winter 2022 term.

We appreciate that more students will be returning to in-person learning in January and some have concerns about making this transition. In response to these concerns, we are adjusting some of the plans for course delivery, including doubling the number of online breadth and general education electives that will be available this Winter term. Where possible, programs with multiple sections will include online options and scheduling is being evaluated to support students’ ability to plan the number of days they need to be on campus.

Each program has a different set of plans that reflect the best approach to achieving the program’s learning outcomes, ensuring students have access to critical hands-on learning and equipment and meeting industry and professional associations’ requirements. It is important to note that for some programs, in-person delivery is required by the professional or industry association that oversees the related profession and is not solely Humber’s decision.

While Humber’s increase of in-person learning aligns with the provincial approach to reopening, the Ministry of Colleges and Universities’ guidelines and public health directives, we appreciate that this transition impacts each student differently. If you have concerns about the Winter 2022 term and learning on campus, you can reach out to your Program Coordinator or Program Advisor to discuss your situation further and to explore potential options.

Winter 2022 Course-Specific Information

This information was shared with students on October 27, 2021.

Dear students, 

Further to our recent update about the Winter 2022 semester, I am pleased to provide you with information regarding program and course delivery for the upcoming term.  

Academic Delivery 

There will be significantly more in-person program and course offerings in the Winter 2022 term. Some courses will have in-person as well as online options.  

The complete list of programs, their mode of delivery and course-specific details and information is available here. The delivery modes listed for winter will continue to be in place in future semesters.  

Please note that some program/course information may be delayed as delivery for those specific areas may be dependent on information from external or affiliated parties that we may not receive until later than the dates indicated. If this is the case, we will communicate to the impacted students as soon as possible. 

Following provincial guideline changes, on-campus learning will be delivered without physical distancing in classrooms and labs. Wearing masks indoors remains mandatory. 

If plans change, or if new or different protocols are put in place by public health, government officials or the college, we may adapt our plans as necessary. 

Vaccination Requirement for Winter 2022 

Beginning in the Winter 2022 semester, only students who are fully vaccinated* or who have an approved medical or human rights exemption with proof of a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours prior to attending campus will be able to attend in-person learning or access campus. Students without an approved medical or human rights exemption who are unvaccinated will not be able to access campus with a negative COVID-19 test. More details about the exemption process will be shared with students in November.

*Per our COVID-19 Vaccination Policyfully vaccinated means having received two (2) doses of a double-dose vaccine or one (1) dose of a single-dose vaccine approved by Health Canada or the World Health Organization and having had the final dose at least fourteen (14) days prior.  

We anticipate that vaccination requirements for campus entry will remain in place until the end of the Winter 2022 term.

Updates on the Winter 2022 term

The following message was sent to students on Thursday, October 14, 2021.

Dear Humber students, 

I hope that your fall is off to a good start. Today, I want to update you on our plans for the winter 2022 term. After transitioning to more in-person learning this term, we are excited to be moving forward with even more in-person academic programming beginning in January.

As always, we are committed to giving you the best possible experience inside and outside of the classroom. We expect to offer significantly more in-person services and increased opportunities for on-campus interactions and activities.  

We also know that many of you prefer to have the flexibility of online learning. There will continue to be online learning options available for some courses. Our Faculties are continuing to determine the modes of delivery for each of the courses within our programs and that information will be shared with you the last week of October.  

All in-person courses and on-campus activities will be run in accordance with our health and safety protocols in place at that time.  

Our plans for the winter are based on some assumptions about the ongoing vaccine rollout, future public health directives and operational requirements. If these assumptions change, or if new or different protocols are put in place by public health, government officials or the college, we will adapt our plans as necessary.  

Vaccination Policy - Update for January 2022  

Humber's Vaccination policy will also evolve for the winter 2022 term. Based on recent guidance from the Ontario Human Rights Commission, exemption requests will only be considered for medical reasons and based on a limited number of Human Rights grounds.   

In order to access campus in winter 2022, students and employees will need to use the Humber Guardian app to: 

  • continue to complete a daily self-screening each time they come to campus;
  • upload proof of vaccination OR for those with an approved medical or human rights exemption, proof of negative COVID-19 test results taken no more than 72 hours prior to attending campus. 

What will be different next term is that only those who are fully vaccinated or those who have an approved medical or human rights exemption and proof of a negative COVID-19 test will be able to access campus. Students who are unvaccinated will not be able to access campus with a negative COVID-19 test. Humber will only offer on-site testing free of charge to students and staff who have an approved exemption. Information about how you can get the Humber Guardian app, upload your proof of vaccination or pursue an exemption can be found on the Humber Vaccination Information page.   

Please note for the remainder of the fall 2021 term, students will be able to access campus with proof of a negative COVID test taken no more than 72 hours prior to attending campus in order to ensure the continuation of studies.

A statement following recent events on other post-secondary campuses

The following message was sent to students on September 28, 2021.

Dear Humber and Guelph-Humber Students,

As we approach the end of September, we hope that you are finding opportunities for learning, wellness, and connection. Over the past several weeks there have been multiple stories about acts of sexual violence on post-secondary campuses. It is important to recognize the impact of these events on those who have experienced sexual violence and to commit to real change in our own communities.

Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber are committed to creating a safe campus experience free from violence for all members of our community. We take this commitment seriously and work diligently with campus and community supports, programs and services to ensure violence is addressed and survivors are supported.

Humber’s Department of Public Safety provides many services to ensure our community members are safe on campus. Some of these include emergency response (call 416.675.6622 x4000), the Campus Walk program, and the Humber Guardian app. Students living in Residence can also access safety supports such as the Resident Assistants on-call, the Front Desk, and the Residence Life Coordinator on-call.

Students who are impacted by sexual violence are encouraged to reach out to the many on- and off-campus supports available, including:

Students seeking to make a formal complaint of sexual violence are encouraged to contact the Office of Student Community Standards or Department of Public Safety.

As we think about the responsibility that we all hold to ensure a safe campus, we encourage you to participate in our Take Back the Night programming taking place this Wednesday, September 29. Take Back the Night is an opportunity for us to come together as a community to protest sexual violence and march in solidarity with survivors; this year’s programming will include:

  • Keynote Speaker Cheryl Nembhard; participants can register to attend in person or virtually
  • Sign-Making from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at North and Lakeshore
  • North Campus March from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Lakeshore Campus Rally from 6:45 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result can now be uploaded to the Humber Guardian App

Beginning on September 20, proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result taken no more than 72 hours prior can be uploaded to the Humber Guardian App, which is used for your daily COVID-19 Self-Assessment.  

Those who already have the app will need to update the app to have the most up-to-date information and functions. To update the app: 

  • from the Guardian’s home screen, users can click on About/Preferences > Data Update > Check for Updates. 
  • Note: you may need to log out and log back into the Guardian app to view the  update. 

To help make this transition as smooth as possible, step-by-step uploading instructions have been created. Once you are on the webpage, identify and click the scenario that applies to you for step-by-step instructions. 

IMPORTANT: Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result must be shown to access campus and facilities beginning Sept. 20

Beginning on Monday, September 20, you will need the following to enter Humber and the University of Guelph-Humber campuses and facilities: 

DAILY CHECKLIST REMINDER 

  • Bring and wear your mask 
  • Complete the daily COVID-19 screening questionnaire on the Humber Guardian App 
  • Show your code 
  • New: Show photo ID and proof of COVID-19 vaccination or proof of a negative COVID-19 test 

Starting on September 20, you will be able to upload proof of COVID-19 vaccination or of a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than 72 hours prior in the Humber Guardian App. 

Step-by-step instructions for how to upload will be provided early next week. While we implement this new process, please plan to have either a hard copy or electronic copy of your proof with you for display for the next few weeks, or until your proof has been confirmed and approved. You will be able to check the status of your submission in the app.  

Please be patient as we implement this new process and be prepared that there may be delays when entering campus or facilities as each person is screened.  

The Guardian app is available for free in Apple or Google Play stores. The self-assessment must still be completed prior to each day you come to campus.  

You can access the self-assessment in the app by clicking on COVID-19 Updates and then COVID-19 Self-Assessment. 

If you do not have a smartphone or are unable to download or update the Humber Guardian app, you can access an alternate format of the questions. Contact the Department of Public Safety at 416.675.8500 or publicsafety@humber.ca if you have any questions.

Upcoming Requirements to Access College Facilities

As we conclude the first week of the fall term, we wanted to provide an update on the requirements to access college facilities.  

Since September 7, everyone accessing college facilities has been required to complete the screening tool on the Humber Guardian app and confirm that they are fully vaccinated or have proof of a recent negative COVID-19 test.  

Beginning on September 20, anyone coming to campus must show the result of their screening (Green QR code) on the Guardian app and either proof of full vaccination or a recent negative test result to access Humber campuses and facilities.  

Below please find details of these requirements based on your individual circumstances. 

You are fully vaccinated 

  • Proof of vaccination will need to be provided in order to access campus. This can be done with a hard copy or email receipt of vaccination.  

You are partially vaccinated and are intending to become fully vaccinated by Saturday, October 18, 2021 

  • Until you are fully vaccinated, proof of a negative COVID-19 test will need to be shown to access campus. This can be done with a hard copy or email result of the negative test taken within the 72 hours prior to attending campus or Humber facilities. Valid proof of a negative COVID-19 test (PCR or rapid antigen) must clearly show the individual’s name, type of COVID-19 test performed, date and time of the test, and the negative result. 

Not intending to become vaccinated/Requesting an exemption 

  • Pending the approval of an exemption, you may continue to access college facilities for the time being provided that you show proof of a recent negative COVID-19 test upon entry. This can be done with a hard copy or email result of the negative test taken within the 72 hours prior to attending campus or Humber facilities. Valid proof of a negative COVID-19 test (PCR or rapid antigen) must clearly show the individual’s name, type of COVID-19 test performed, date and time of the test, and the negative result. If an exemption is approved and your on-campus learning or work is accommodated, you will need to continue to provide proof of a negative test taken within 72 hours of each visit to campus.  
  • Exemption forms will begin to be issued the week of September 13. 

On-Site Rapid Antigen Testing 

On-site Rapid Antigen Testing is now offered free of charge to staff and students who need to provide proof of a negative test in order to access Humber campuses and facilities. Below are important details related to testing: 

  • Students and staff will be able to access testing at these sites free of charge. Appointments can be made by visiting the testing clinic scheduling site. Please note that the booking system that was linked in previous communication experienced some technical difficulties. Please use this new booking site link
  • Walk-ins will not be accepted and cannot be accommodated.  
  • Same day appointments may not be available, so please plan ahead and book an appointment within 72 hours of each time you need to be on campus. 
  • Rapid testing is also available at many pharmacies for a fee.

Appointments can be made by visiting the testing clinic scheduling site. Walk-ins will not be accepted and cannot be accommodated. Same day appointments may not be available, so please plan ahead and book an appointment within 72 hours of each time you need to be on campus.

Those with appointments will receive confirmation of date, time, and location beforehand. Anyone with an appointment should bring their personal identification as well as their student number/N number with them.  

If the results of the Rapid Antigen test are negative, an individual will be provided with an immediate printed receipt confirming the results. It will take a minimum of 15 minutes after test completion to receive the results.  

If the results of the test are positive, an individual will receive a PCR test on the spot, be sent home to self-isolate and receive the results within 24 hours.   

Those entering campus for this purpose will need to complete the COVID-19 Self-Screening verbally upon entry to these locations. Public Safety officers will be stationed at entryways to conduct this screening. 

COVID-19 Vaccination Policy Update/Requirements to Access College Facilities 

The following information was sent to students on September 3, 2021. 

We wanted to provide an update on Humber’s new COVID-19 vaccination policy and requirements to access college facilities during the first few weeks of the fall term.  

We appreciate your patience as we implement the new policy. This week, we have received further information from the provincial government about mandatory requirements for Ontario college and university vaccination policies and exemption processes. We are reviewing that information to ensure our policy is in alignment with government and public health directives.   

We are committed to keeping you up to date and informed. We know that there are many questions and we are working hard to answer them as quickly as we can.

Please note that you will receive communication regarding your exemption request once you have completed both the Declaration of COVID-19 Vaccination Status and Acknowledgement of Return to Campus Conditions and the exemption details form. The exemption details form will be sent to you after you have submitted the Return to Campus Acknowledgment form, beginning the week of September 13. 

Return to Campus Acknowledgment Form 

Earlier this week, a Declaration of COVID-19 Vaccination Status and Return to Campus Acknowledgment form was sent to students by email.  

Thank you to all of those who have submitted their form. For forms received the week of August 30, the deadline for submission is September 7. 

As students continue to register and confirm their enrolment status, we will be sending out this form. Please submit the form within a week of receiving it. 

If you have not yet received the form, it may be due to the fact that you have only recently confirmed your enrolment status for the fall term. Please also check your junk mail/spam folder. If you have not yet received the form and would like to confirm if it has been sent to you, please email studentdeclaration@humber.ca

Exemption form distribution update 

We now plan to issue exemption forms beginning the week of September 13.  

We recognize that we previously communicated that exemption forms should be submitted by September 7. However, as we continue to receive new information from the provincial government relating to mandatory vaccination policies, we are completing a further review of the exemptions process. 

For those intending to seek an exemption on medical grounds, please note that the College of Physicians and Surgeons Ontario has advised its members that there are very few acceptable medical exemptions to COVID-19 vaccination.   

Students seeking an exemption can come to campus if they follow the requirements outlined below. 

Requirements to access college facilities beginning September 7 for students who are currently not fully vaccinated or are seeking an exemption 

Until you are fully vaccinated or have an approved exemption, you are required to have proof of a negative COVID-19 test in order to attend campus. This can be done with a hard copy or email result of the negative test taken within the 72 hours prior to attending campus. Valid proof of a negative COVID-19 test (PCR or rapid antigen) must clearly show the individual’s name, type of COVID-19 test performed, date and time of the test, and the negative result. 

We are planning to provide Rapid Antigen Testing onsite at the North and Lakeshore campuses beginning the week of September 13. Students and staff will be able to access testing at these sites free of charge. A reminder that Rapid Antigen Testing is for asymptomatic individuals, if you have symptoms consistent with COVID-19 please do not attend campus for any reason. Students at the International Graduate School can find information on testing location options on the IGS student portal. 

Prior to those sites opening, anyone coming to campus who is not fully vaccinated is responsible for ensuring they have secured a negative test result, including any associated costs. Rapid Antigen Testing is available at pharmacies to individuals who do not have any symptoms of COVID-19. To find a location near you, visit: covid-19.ontario.ca/assessment-centre-locations. 

Everyone is required to complete the screening tool on the Humber Guardian app when attending campus in-person. You will need to show the result of your screening to access campus facilities.  
 
Later this month, we expect that you will be able to upload your test result via the Humber Guardian app as part of the screening process, and we will share more details on how to do that and information on the app’s privacy protections. 

COVID-19 Vaccination Status Declaration and Return to Campus Acknowledgement

The following message was shared with Fall 2021 students on August 27, 2021. 

Dear Humber students,

We are looking forward to welcoming more of you to our campuses and facilities this fall. As has been the case throughout the pandemic, our top priority is to ensure the health and safety of our community.

In addition to our recently announced COVID-19 vaccination policy, we have many health and safety measures planned for the Fall 2021 term, including that physical distancing requirements and indoor mask-wearing will continue to be in place across our campuses and facilities.

We are pleased to share with you further details of the COVID-19 vaccination policy and Return to Campus Acknowledgement form.

  1. Beginning Monday, August 30, all students will receive an email from Humber College via DocuSign containing the Vaccination Status Declaration and Return to Campus Acknowledgement, along with instructions for completing the form. This is a DocuSign form. Please note that you will need an Internet connection and browser to complete the form. You will not need any special software.
  2. Students must complete and submit the Return to Campus acknowledgement form by 11:59 p.m. EDT on Monday, September 6, 2021.

This means declaring either:

  1. that you are fully vaccinated
  2. that you are not yet fully vaccinated and are intending to become fully vaccinated by Monday, October 18, 2021
  3. that you are not intending to become vaccinated, and are requesting an exemption or will be studying completely online for the Fall 2021 and have no plans to access campus facilities

More information on these scenarios is outlined in the chart below. Regardless of your declaration, you will receive a follow-up email from Humber confirming the status you submitted and outlining next steps.

If you indicate your status as b) or c), you will be required to provide proof of a current COVID-19 negative test result in order to access campus, until you are fully vaccinated or have received an individualized accommodation plan or until alternate work arrangements are put in place.

All students are required to complete the form. This includes those who may be planning to fully learn remotely and are not expecting to come to campus during the fall term. If you indicate your status as c) and are studying completely remotely, you are acknowledging that if you are to attend any of the Humber or University of Guelph-Humber campuses or locations that you will be required to follow the college’s vaccination policy. Currently, that means you would be required to present proof of vaccination or results of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of attending campus.

  1. By October 18, all individuals coming to a Humber campus or facility in person must provide proof that they are fully vaccinated or have received an exemption, and that any accommodation(s) granted is being followed.
  2. Details about the process for providing proof of COVID-19 vaccination will be shared with the Humber community by mid-to-late September.

The COVID-19 vaccination policy applies to all students, employees, contractors and visitors to Humber’s campuses or facilities. It supports previously announced requirements for varsity athletes, students living in residence and those involved with programs with specific work-integrated learning experiences that already require staff/students to be fully vaccinated.

A vaccination policy FAQ has been created to help provide further information and it is updated on an ongoing basis. Students who may have further questions should contact covidreporting@humber.ca.

- Secure a negative test result prior to each time attending campus. The test must be done within 72 hours prior to coming to campus
- When available upload test results to the Guardian App
- When available upload proof of vaccination to the Guardian App. Details about the upload process will be shared mid-to-late September 

  • Post October 18 - Once proof of vaccine is uploaded, continue to fill out screening tool daily when attending campus in-person

3.      Not intending to be vaccinated/requesting an exemption or studying fully online

  • August 30 - Receive Return to Campus Acknowledgement form
  • By September 7 - Complete and submit Return to Campus Acknowledgement form indicating request for exemption or that you are studying fully online. You will receive a follow-up form to complete and submit.
  • Prior to October 18 -

    If coming to campus:

  • Continue to fill out screening tool daily when attending campus in-person. Display result of screening in order to access facilities

Humber College COVID-19 Vaccine Policy Statement

The health and safety of our community has been our top priority throughout the pandemic. Earlier this week, we provided an update on the health and safety measures planned for the Fall 2021 term, including that physical distancing requirements and indoor mask-wearing will continue to be in place across our campuses and facilities.

Following yesterday’s provincial announcement, Humber will be adding to these measures by introducing a COVID-19 vaccination policy for students, employees, contractors and any visitors to the college’s campuses or facilities.

This new policy will be in effect for the Fall term and supports previously announced requirements for varsity athletes, students living in residence and those involved with programs with specific work-integrated learning experiences that already require staff/students to be fully vaccinated.

Under the new policy, by October 18, individuals coming to campus or a Humber facility in person must provide proof that they are fully vaccinated or that they have received an exemption from the college based on human rights (including medical) or conscientious grounds.

As a first step in implementing this policy, students and employees will need to declare their vaccination status by September 7 as a part of a Fall 2021 Return to Campus acknowledgement.

The Return to Campus acknowledgment will be sent by email to employees and students by the end of August. Those who are not partially or fully vaccinated will be required to begin an application for exemption by September 7. Information for the exemption process will be provided as part of the Return to Campus acknowledgment.

Humber will work with exempted individuals on a case-by-case basis to find a reasonable and appropriate approach to accommodation. This may include alternative health and safety requirements, like regular rapid testing or a transition to remote learning or work, where possible.

Proof of full vaccination must be provided by October 18. We will share details early in the Fall term about the process for providing that proof. The process will be designed to ensure that any personal health information submitted to the college will be secure and confidential.

The final policy will be informed by relevant provincial and public health directives for colleges and universities. Full details of the new policy will be shared with the Humber community once it is complete. An FAQ has been created to help provide further information and will be updated on an ongoing basis as more information is available. Humber Statement – Fall 2021 Health and Safety Measures

The health and safety of our staff and students remain our top priorities.

For the fall term, Humber will continue to follow the direction of Toronto Public Health and maintain robust health and safety measures, including:

  • Masks or face coverings continue to be mandatory inside all Humber campus buildings.
  • Required COVID-19 self-screening for anyone coming to campus using the Humber Guardian App.
  • Physical distancing continues to be required across campus and class sizes will be reduced to support physical distancing in each training space. Where physical distancing is not possible, additional health and safety protocols will be introduced. Although recent provincial government guidelines stated that physical distancing would not be required at colleges and universities, Humber will continue with this measure to help keep our community safe knowing the high transmission rate of the Delta variant.
  • Access to rapid testing for staff and students on campus.
  • Students living in residence, varsity athletes and those in select programs with specific work-integrated learning requirements must be fully vaccinated.
  • Offering student services virtually as well as in-person.
  • Required health and safety training and orientation for all employees.
  • Enhanced cleaning and sanitization of equipment, tools and spaces.
  • Strategies to ensure appropriate ventilation on campus, such as increasing air change rates and maintaining proper humidification levels to limit the pathogens in the air.

Vaccinations are a critical public health measure in reducing the risk and spread of COVID-19. Humber strongly encourages staff and students to get vaccinated.

Humber is continually assessing our health and safety measures and will update or adapt our approaches, as required.

Humber to require COVID-19 vaccinations for students living in residence for fall 2021

On July 19, the Ministry of Colleges and Universities issued updated guidance for fall 2021 planning, including encouraging post-secondary institutions to return to normal as much as possible for life on campus. Humber Residence wishes to implement this recommendation as much as possible to provide our residents with a more typical residence life experience this year, and as a result, has decided to follow the lead of many other residences in the province and require COVID-19 vaccinations for students living in residence for fall 2021. 

All incoming residents who are able to be vaccinated must have at least the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine approved by the Government of Canada prior to moving into residence and commit to obtaining a second dose no later than Friday, October 8, 2021, for vaccines that require a second dose. At this time, the COVID-19 vaccines approved by the Government of Canada are: Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca/COVISHIELD, and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson). Students who are unable to receive a vaccination will have the opportunity to request a medical or human rights exemption on the grounds of disability and/or creed, which must be approved prior to moving in.
