As an institute of education, we need to better understand the potential gains and drawbacks that AI chatbots present — not only for our learners — but for the wider Humber community — from the support staff who respond to student queries at a department’s front desk to the upper administrators who strategize about the institution’s long-term goals and direction. Collectively, we need to explore how can we integrate this technology to streamline our workflow and support the learning process within our classrooms. At the same time, we also need to discern how to mitigate the risks that such technology presents to academic integrity and, more generally, overall learning.

In a cross-faculty collaboration between three Humber programs, chatbots ChatGPT and Jasper AI will be used in a collaborative, client-focussed project. We will explore the potential of AI chatbots in the Humber classroom, using this technology as both a teaching tool and content generator.

Designed as a cross-faculty collaboration, this proposal includes three programs (two from the Longo Faculty of Business and one from the Faculty of Media and Creative Arts). At its heart, this proposal exemplifies a multidisciplinary approach and will clearly harness new and emerging technology in teaching and learning while advancing digital fluency in both students and faculty.
