Ronald Poulton, former legal advisor to UN Peacekeeping Operations and human rights investigator, will argue that the United Nations offers a neutral alternative to partisan and reckless superpower interventions in the name of peace and security. Although largely abandoned by Canada and other Western powers, and admittedly imperfect and sometimes grossly negligent, it is the only mechanism which can truly provide a troubled world with an avenue for peaceful reconciliation.

Film Title:        Elephant (2003)
Date:                Wednesday, November 24. 2010
Time:                7 p.m.
Location:         E135 (North Campus)

Synopsis:
Elephant chronicles the day-to-day personal lives of ordinary American teenagers in the moments leading up to a high school shooting. Based in part on the Colombine High School shootings of 1999, this critically-acclaimed film - which won the Palme D'Or at Cannes and was recently named by the AGO/Cinematheque as one of the top films of the decade - sensitively depicts the complex reasons behind such a tragic event, and warns us of what can happen when we collectively ignore the 'elephant in the room.'
