My Leadership Journey

Path 2 logo/imageWe’ve updated this program to give students more flexibility and more opportunities to showcase their leadership journey! Grounded in the Social Change Model of Leadership Development our new program offers plenty of exciting experiences for students to engage with. After participating in this program students will have their very own unique leadership portfolio to showcase online and to future employers.

Each experience has its own list of required components that must be completed in order to receive credit for your participation. Workshops are only offered from February 2020 – March 2020 but all other components can be completed at any time between May 2019 - April 2020.

In order to receive CCR credit for this program students must complete and submit the necessary reflection components for 5 of the 8 experiences listed below. Reflection worksheets can be downloaded from our website or printed copies can be picked up our Student Life Office (Lakeshore – WEL201 and North – LRC2033). All reflections and supplemental documents can be submitted electronically by emailing studentleadershipacademy@humber.ca or hard copies can be dropped off at either Student Life Office.

My Leadership Journey Program Components

Students must complete 5 of the 8 program components listed below.

  1. Leadership Around Me
    • Students will be asked to reflect on leadership and what it means to them based on their experiences. These could include stories they have read, movies they have seen, a role model or mentor they have, or respond to a social problem that they would like to solve. Students are encouraged to support their reflection using evidence from articles, media and/or interviews.

  2. Leadership Defined
    • Students will have the opportunity to express their leadership philosophy/definition in their own artistic/creative medium. This could be through dance, music, poetry, visual or graphic arts. Their piece will be accompanied by the definition/philosophy they are showcasing along with a brief description of how it is displayed in their creative forum.

  3. Leadership on Campus
    • Students will participate in 1 Humber College or the University of Guelph-Humber campus experience between May 2019 – April 2020. These experiences can range from workshops, events, guest speakers, etc. and will allow students to connect Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber based on their interests and network with other likeminded individuals. Note that participation cannot be part of a paid or volunteer work experience.

  4. Leadership and My Community
    • Students volunteer 10 hours of their time with a community initiative of their choice. Volunteering invites students to give back to their community in a way that meets their areas of interest. Student are encouraged to choose a cause that is significant to them and how their leadership philosophy. Volunteer hours can be completed from May 2019-April 2020 and can be a mix of on and off campus involvement from different organizations

  5. *Workshop 1 – Leading Self
    • In this 60-minute workshop, participants will explore how their personal values and qualities build to create their leadership style. Through self-reflection, and exploring personal leadership philosophies; participants will develop strategies for their personal leadership journey and how to take it to the next level.

  6. *Workshop 2 – Leading Others
    • In this 60-minute workshop, participants will have the opportunity to discuss collaboration and group interactions through a leadership lens. Exploring the role of leadership styles and skills when leading others, participants will develop group leadership skills, strategies and goals.

  7. *Workshop 3  - Leading Society
    • In this 60-minute workshop, participants will have the opportunity to apply their individual and group leadership skills to leading society. Participants will work to understand how to use their leadership skills in society, and establish effective citizenship goals.

  8. *Workshop 4 – Me, Myself and Leadership
    • After learning about individual, group and society leadership opportunities and skills; participants will have the opportunity to reflect on their leadership journey thus far. In this hands on 60-minute workshop, participants will discuss connections between leadership and their career goals and how they can continue to develop their leadership skills outside of the Leadership Academy.
