Enabling Offline Submissions and Grading Them

What is an Offline Submission?

When collecting submissions in-person or on a platform other than Blackboard Ultra, an offline assessment can be created to store student grades and feedback. Unlike a grade column, offline assessments have more grading flexibility. There are more feedback options and a rubric can also be used to grade the offline assessment.

Follow the video below to see how to enable an offline submission and grade them using a rubric:

You can also view each step-by-step process below.

How do I enable an Offline Submission?

  1. Open the assessment and select the setting icon located at the top right corner.
A gear icon next to a sentence saying "Assignment Settings".
  2. Select Collect submissions offline and save.
Details and Information menu with options to change the due date, prohibit late submissions/attempts, allow class conversations, randomize questions/answers and collect submissions offline. Collect submissions offline is selected.
  3. The content area of the assignment should now have the following notice:
A notice stating that this is an offline assessment.

How do I Grade an Offline Submission?

  1. Access the assessment from Gradebook.
A red arrow pointing to "Gradebook" in the navigation bar and a red arrow pointing to an offline Assignment below.
  2. Click on the name of a student to create their attempt.
The name of a student is displayed as well as a message saying "1 to grade".
  3. Enter in the date/time they made their offline submission. After you make your desired changes, click Save.
An attempt is being created and there is a space to enter date/time that the offline submission was made.
  4. The panel should enlarge into a window. Grades and feedback for the student can be now inputted.

  5. You can also use a rubric to grade offline submissions; learn about how to create rubrics here.
