About:
In this unique summer abroad experience, funded by Global Skills Opportunity Canada, students will explore the Six Nations of the Grand River. Through land-and-culture experiences, students will have the opportunity to learn about the interconnected nature of Haudenosaunee ways of knowing, being, and doing, expressed through worldview, histories, language, stories, and cultural practices. Students will embark on a 3 day pre-departure experience at Humber North campus and a day trip at Six Nations, followed by a 2-week immersive experience on the beautiful island of Hawaii.
In Polynesia, voyaging on canoes has shaped who we are as people, our values, and our relationships with each other along with the natural world. In modern times, canoes serve as a metaphor as well as a “floating” classroom through which we re-learn interconnectedness as well as our kuleana (responsibility) in the larger web of life. In this program, we will go on a learning voyage through the island of Kauaʻi; Mauka to Makai (Mountain to Ocean), learning about the culture and history of the island as well as the challenges that the community faces and efforts that we make to restore/seek balance and build foundations for a more sustainable and just future. Participants will interact directly with Kupuna (Elders), Public Officials, Business Owners, and Community Leaders in a dialogue around the issues and, utilizing the design thinking framework, work as teams to present potential solutions to these issues. This course investigates Polynesian connections through life experiences. This is a study abroad course in which the student will experience the interconnectedness of the peoples and cultures of Polynesia, other Pacific nations, or other nations throughout the world through cultural immersion. Studies will begin on the home campus and culminate with a visit to the host country.
