Humber Polytechnic: Builders of Brilliance

Today is an important and exciting day for Humber. At this morning’s President’s Breakfast, we announced our vision for our collective future and our new name – Humber Polytechnic – and brand, Builders of Brilliance; culminating the Humber Inspired work accomplished over the last year. Thank you to everyone who participated in helping to shape what comes next for Humber.

As I said in my speech this morning, we are building Humber Polytechnic by building brilliance.

Humber has been providing a polytechnic model of education since 1967 and it is time for the next era of it. A polytechnic education offers a distinct third option between university and college – one that combines deep, theoretical learning with applied, hands-on experience to foster employability for graduates. The polytechnic model is well established and highly regarded across Canada and the world. It’s time to define it here in Ontario.

Our province and our country have been facing a persistent and growing challenge in recent years. Productivity, the engine of economic growth, has been in decline in Canada.

As a country, we have struggled to live up to our potential to effectively convert innovation into commercial success. It’s time to change that.

We have the programs, skills, and people to change the way we empower the future workforce, and we have the leadership to bridge the gap between academia, industry, and government to promote and enrich a culture of innovation.

Over the next decade, Humber will lead the definition, discovery, value, possibilities and opportunities of polytechnic education in Ontario, Canada, and around the globe. We will build innovative credentials that support personalized learning and develop employability of our graduates.

Humber is preparing to lead a new era of higher education. We will do so as Humber Polytechnic. While we may not be the first to use that word, we’ll be leaning in to define it.

I can’t wait to do so – together.
