When does the FYE Program run?

The First Year Experience Program runs every term.

During the fall term, FYE runs from August - November, where matching occurs only in the month of August - September. 

During the winter term, FYE runs from December - March, where matching occurs only in the months of December - January. 

During the summer term, FYE runs from April - July, where matching occurs only in the months of April - May

Who can join First Year Experience (FYE)?

FYE is open to all Humber and Guelph-Humber first year students!

What is Pre-Arrival Mentoring Sessions?

Pre-Arrival Mentoring Sessions are virtual MS Teams meeting links that are shared to all first-year students. First-year students are reccomended to attend these virtual sessions as they pertain to important information you will need to be successful prior to starting your first week of classes. Important information includes and is not limited to orientation details, meet your faculty details, welcome station details, welcome month details and more. 

Why Should I Join?

IT’S FREE!!! and it will improve your grades! You will also get connected to others within your program,be invited to attend exclusive socials and events, get directed to additional academic support if needed, meet new people and more!

Can I be an FYE Peer Mentor?

Upper year Humber students who are in good academic standing  are eligible to apply to be Peer Mentors. Learn more about becoming a FYE Peer Mentor

What do FYE Peer Mentors do?

They keep in touch with you online, arrange get-togethers at the school, can organize study groups, and even plan exclusive social events for you too! Peer Mentors are here to support your transition into Humber Polytechnic!

I just registered for FYE. When will I get contacted by my mentor?

Mentees will be contacted by their peer mentors during the first week of school. Check your email regularly after you register as we will be sending you more information about Humber Polytechnic.

When does the FYE program start?

The FYE program officially begins 3 weeks prior to your first week of classes. First Year Experience will be hosting pre-arrival sessions along side the Orientation team to get your ready to attend your Orientation and arrive on campus feeling supported. First-year students are reccomended to sign-up for the FYE peer mentorship program "get a mentor" as early as possible.

What happens after I get matched with a mentor?

After being matched with a peer mentor, they will reach out to weekly providing you insight on whats happening on campus. During the matching period, first-year students are responsible to respond back to their mentors and/or ask any questions they have as they transition into Humber Polytechnic. 

What if I can’t attend an FYE workshop or event because it conflicts with my class schedule?

If you are unable to attend one or more of our scheduled workshops or events let us know! We will be unable to run our events again as they are planned well in advanced by our student leaders. If you miss an event, be sure to catch our next one!

How often do I have to meet or contact my mentor?

Mentors are encouraged to keep in contact with their mentees on a regular basis. However, it is up to you to determine how often you want to engage in the mentoring relationship. The more you engage with your mentor, the better your experience will be! We strongly encourage you to keep in touch with your mentor as often as you can.

Is there a fee for joining FYE?

NO! ALL FYE EVENTS AND SERVICES ARE 100% FREE!

Could FYE improve my grades?

Yes. Research has shown that students who get involved in "high impact practices" (Kuh, 2008) such as first year experience programs like FYE, will show improved grades in comparison with students that have not participated in these programs (Salinitri, 2005).

Could FYE Help Me Get a Job?

Yes. Studies have also indicated that co-curricular involvement, such as the participation in high impact practices like FYE, is seen as valuable by employers (Canadian Association of Career Educators & Employers, 2012)."Respondents’ also place a slightly higher premium on co-curricular involvement than on academic performance" (CACEE, 2012).

What is the FYE Incentive Program?

By signing up as a Peer Mentor, you will have the opportunity to win a monthly raffle prize. Each month the FYE team raffles each peer mentors name to select a winner. The morning interactions peer mentors have with there mentees, the more raffle tickets they have. May the odds be ever in your favor.
