"To whom do I owe the biggest apology?
No one's been crueller than I've been to me."

I had a similar reaction when I read this quote the first time. The realization was both overwhelming and unsettling, and all I could do was stare at nothing- contemplating my life so far, regretting and grieving my hurt soul. The emotion behind this man's eyes, and his state of apparent self-destruction because of poor coping mechanisms were relatable to me at the time and I wanted to capture it.

The inspiration for this piece stems from an ode to my ancestors that were torn apart from their roots during colonial times - my motherland of Ghana. I approached this painting with themes of pain, grief and displacement along with honour. The use of special chosen acrylic and oil paint colours helped represent various aspects of these themes. The blue background is the foundation of the painting that represents the waters that hold many of these lost souls to this day. Those who chose to drown and return to mother earth rather than be enslaved. For some, the blue hues of the sea were the final images engrained after being violently uprooted from the land, cultures and world they once knew to be home. The red represents the blood of those who lost their lives fighting for liberation from colonizers. These two colours helped me bring to life my themes of pain, grief and displacement. To juxtapose those ideas, I wanted to bring forth colours that would highlight and represent pride and honour. For centuries, the beautiful black and brown tones of my people have always been demonized and weaponized against us, so by incorporating jet black acrylic and oil paints, I wanted to exaggerate the importance of representing black skin and loving this skin in a world that is fixated on dehumanizing us. The use of yellow along with the gold Bamboo Earring used as a septum, embodies the gold that lies beneath the land of Ghana. This mineral is very precious to the people of my motherland because gold is representative of royalty, and it acts as a symbol of warmth and continuous life. So though the faces of these souls may be lost, their legacy will forever live. These colours come together to create the mosaic of faces within faces that depict the lost, but never forgotten souls of the Land of Gold. The motherland. An ode to home and the souls of the land. Ghana.

My reference for this piece was a photo of my aunt back home in Ghana, someone who I really admire and her sense of style reflects her personality. She is very outgoing, fun to be around and energetic and I really wanted the colours of her outfit and headscarf to reflect that. I titled the piece 'Sunday Best"; as the term refers to when someone is dressed in their best clothes, often for special occasions. Here I illustrated my aunt to be in her "Sunday Best" as she is someone that I know loves to look and feel their best. Something i resonate with myself. 2023 Georgia Acheampong Visual and Digital Art Lakeshore Faculty/Staff, Email 07-03-2022

I was inspired and intrigued to use cyanotypes after learning about anthotypes and how natural photography processes work. I chose to do an image of me staring directly into the camera and the viewer as my work tends to focus on portraits of black women and the black gaze. Black people are often viewed from lenses and there have been many accounts in my life where I have been confronted by stares ad glares from society just for simply existing as a black woman. This piece is meant to challenge the viewer as they think they are looking at my self portrait, but really, I am the one holding the power staring back at them. 2022 Georgia Acheampong Visual and Digital Art Lakeshore Faculty/Staff, Email 07-03-2022 Honourable Mention

This image comes from knowing that sometimes we have to shut in our inner child, chin up, and make tough decisions. It could be cutting off that long overdue relationship that you've spent your life building even though you knew it wasn't healthy for you, like a child who loves consuming candies when too much of it only leads to diabetes. The more we grow, the more we learn, the more we hide our childish ways from voicing out. 2023 Bukola Adebamiro Photography North Faculty/Staff, Word of Mouth 07-03-2022

Some journeys are well planned and would lead to victory, some not so much. We might find treasures at the end of our journey, or we might end up discovering we were the treasure all along.
