Grindhouse Presents: Call of Cthulu

Original Piece
Being a Humber graphic design student, I created this artwork for a movie poster assignment in my Typography 2 course. We had to base our movie poster off a book in the Gutenberg website and I chose Call of Cthulu because I am fond of horror.

I decided to go with a style that was popular in the 70s and 80s movie posters which is coined “grindhouse”. The grindhouse genre is known for its low-budget horror/slasher aesthetic and depictions of gore, nudity, violence, splatter and exploitation. Primary color schemes are often variations of reds paired with black. Chunky, bold typography is used for the attention-grabbing “in-your-face” effect which correlates the violence and gore that would essentially be thrown in the viewers face. Textures that are used are paper overlays ranging from ripped, torn, folded or aged. For extra embellishment, splatter effect brushes would be dusted all over.
