This is a figure painting of my mom. She is a very introverted person, and I wanted to capture her in her most natural element; In the quietest place she can find. The composition is similar to James Abbott McNeill Whistler's Mother painting, however the style of my piece is more abstracted. I wanted this piece to have a nice balance between realism and abstraction to give it a good sense of energy and visual fluidity. My reference picture was taken against a wall with built in cubbies and square framed paintings which inspired me to make the painting unusually long to emphasize those geometric shapes.
