Humber Polytechnic recently celebrated an impressive and significant milestone – the 19,000th enrolment in Continuous Professional Learning (CPL).
CPL is Humber’s continuing education and lifelong learning operation that offers continuing and professional learning products such as courses, micro-credentials and certificates that help to upskill, reskill or reconfigure someone's personal or professional future. Paralleling the market demand for increased upskilling and ongoing career learning, CPL enjoyed a 37 per cent growth in enrolment in the 2023-2024 academic year.
In March, the learner representing the 19,000th enrolment, Jason Mercier, was invited to campus to celebrate the milestone. Mercier is the vice-president of Operations at Retirement Life Communities and is currently enrolled in the Condominium Management program.
He spoke to a room filled with Humber administrators about his hesitant start and supportive experience returning to learning mid-career in the Condominium Management program delivered by Education Training Services and the need for continuous upskilling and certification in his field of hospitality and customer experience.
“I would say initially it was quite intimidating as it had been a very long time since I had gone to school,” said Mercier. “So, jumping back into a classroom environment was a little daunting. The online experience was very positive, the professors were great, the content was great and very pertinent to the skills that are required for a condominium manager. It was a great experience overall.”
Mercier was looking to secure his general and limited license through the program and needed that professional certification to be able to move forward with his career.
“I googled the best programs and Humber popped right up at the top and I dove in headfirst,” added Mercier.
Frank Cappadocia, dean of CPL, spoke about the path toward achieving the 19,000th learner milestone and gave thanks to the Faculties and Divisions whose hard work ensures quality of delivery, learner support and subject matter expertise allows Humber CPL to excel in the expansive world of online learning.
Asked for advice for other prospective CPL learners, Mercier said to ensure they have the self-discipline to set aside time for the program and to really commit to the educational experience. If they do, they will learn a great deal, said Mercier.
