Humber Polytechnic launched a new asynchronous online certificate in the fall in partnership with Durham College designed to support healthcare professionals who wish to expand their expertise in mental health care.
The Mental Health for Healthcare Workers certificate offers a strong foundation in mental health, covering key areas such as common mental health disorders, psychopharmacology, and therapeutic interventions. The program emphasizes cultural humility, evidence-based practices, and approaches for individuals, families, and communities. Learners will develop skills in building therapeutic relationships, conducting comprehensive risk assessments, trauma-informed care, crisis and safety management, and inter-professional collaboration for holistic mental health services.
Thanks to the support of the Barrett Family Foundation, tuition is fully covered. Learners are only responsible for a $30+ HST registration fee and the cost of a textbook. This certificate is ideal for professionals working in the healthcare field including registered nurses, personal support workers, social workers, paramedics, and community support roles.
The certificate also aligns with the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing competencies and may assist nurses in preparing for the Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing certification, while also enhancing their skills to support client well-being.
The first cohort began this September in a fully asynchronous online format, with six courses required to complete the certificate.
