The Humber Polytechnic community is cheering on one of its own this weekend. Mark Hoffman, the assistant men’s golf coach, will be competing in the 2025 RBC Canadian Open.

Hoffman, who just finished his fifth season with the Humber Hawks, will be facing off against some of the top golfers in the world at the prestigious tournament being held June 4 to 8 at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley.

Defending champion Robert MacIntyre and two-time winner Rory McIlroy along with 2023 champion Nick Taylor and fellow Canadian stars Corey Conners, Taylor Pendrith, Mackenzie Hughes, Adam Hadwin and Adam Svensson are just a few of the athletes vying for a piece of the $9.8 million (USD) purse.

Hoffman is a former member of the Humber Hawks men’s golf team from 2007 to 2011 under head coach (and current athletics director) Ray Chateau. Those teams won four Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) national championships during that span while finishing second once. He also won two national individual silver medals in 2010 and 2011.

“We’re incredibly proud of Mark for participating in the RBC Canadian Open,” said Chateau. “Seeing a former Humber Hawk player and current coach compete on one of golf’s biggest stages is a testament to his hard work, perseverance and the strong foundation he built here. It’s an inspiring moment for our entire Humber Athletics community.”

He also won the RCGA University/College Championship title in 2011 and is one of three Humber players to win the individual gold (a feat he accomplished in 2011). It’s considered one of the most prestigious events as it features the top golfers in university and college across the country.

Hoffman was inducted into the Humber Hall of Fame in 2012.
