Doug Hadders entered Humber’s Comedy: Writing and Performance program with some initial hesitation after a 10-year career in radio and as a mature student. However, he quickly became immersed in the material and never looked back.
“I was a mature student coming in at 35. It was make or break. I took it quite seriously and it paid off. I ended up winning the Phil Hartman Award for Outstanding New Comedian at the Phil Hartman Comedy Festival.”
Hadders’ vast portfolio includes numerous writing and voiceover roles in animation. Currently, he is the Executive Story Editor for Alien TV at Entertainment One. This comedy show revolves around three aliens who travel to earth as a news crew, reporting on the peculiar habits of human beings. Doug’s experience at Humber prepared him with the foundation and skills to write from diverse perspectives. The aliens in the show don’t speak English, so Doug’s writing has to convey emotions in the characters and concepts without using the English language.
“It doesn’t matter how talented you are, especially at the beginning of your career. It is imperative that you just be a pleasure to work with because everybody knows everybody. It is a small world, just be good to work with. It will make your life easier.”
Doug is always eager and open to pursue new opportunities in entertainment. He is a passionate writer who has thrived as a creator and storyteller. He enjoys reflecting on his career and is always happy to provide advice to those interested in entering this type of career.
