The CBIE2025 Conference was so nice, Humber Polytechnic graduate Jesse Major attended twice.

Major, who is a graduate of the Fitness and Health Promotion and Wellness Coaching programs, was named an ambassador for the Global Skills Opportunity (GSO) program last year, which is the Government of Canada’s national outbound student mobility program. It empowers post-secondary institutions to increase the participation of Canadians in international learning opportunities — especially students with disabilities, Indigenous students and those who have traditionally faced socio-economic barriers to participation.

The 15 ambassadors, of which Major was one, represented the GSO program and the more than 12,000 post-secondary students who have gained global skills through GSO-funded international experiences. As ambassadors, they shared their stories, testimonials as well as the benefits of global learning on social media while participating in events and supporting the GSO program.

Major attended CBIE2025, which is for international education professionals and offered a variety of keynotes, workshops and other events and activities, as part of his role as a GSO ambassador last year in Ottawa. He enjoyed the experience so much, he decided to attend again this year in Quebec City.

Major had an opportunity to attend JAMK University of Applied Sciences in Finland as part of a three-week summer school program in the summer of 2022 and appreciates the benefits of international education. That experience was incredibly impactful for him and so he wanted to be a part of CBIE2025 to hear from others about their experiences with learning abroad.

“If you’re passionate about international education, this is a conference that’s well worth attending,” said Major.

He attended keynotes by Charles-Olivier Michaud, an award-winning Canadian filmmaker, screenwriter, and director recognized for exploring human transformation and identity across cultures as well as Fanta Aw, executive director and CEO of NAFSA: Association of International Educators.

“I loved hearing their stories. Fanta Aw was really great, and it was amazing getting to hear about her work as it’s incredibly important,” he said.
