Victoria Silva knows firsthand just how helpful a Humber College scholarship can be.
Silva, a second-year Law Clerk student, was alerted to the College’s robust offering of scholarships in her first year when she received an email about them. She applied and received a scholarship. This school year, she applied again and received a total of $4,500.
“What I like about the scholarships is that they helped alleviate my financial stress so I’m not worrying about being unable to pay for my tuition or books and the effect that could have on my studies,” said Silva. “It’s also given me more confidence in myself as my hard work and efforts in the community have been recognized.”
Humber students can apply for winter scholarships starting from January 5 to February 2. The scholarships are made possible thanks to Humber’s community of donors and alumni, including faculty and staff who donate through Humber Gives or work with the College’s Advancement and Alumni team.
Last year, more than 1,000 scholarships were awarded to Humber students.
“Not all the scholarships are awarded based on academic merit,” said Marlene Valerio, manager, Student Scholarships and Bursaries, Advancement and Alumni. “Many are based on community involvement, leadership initiatives, extracurricular activities and, in some cases, financial need.”
Some applications may even require the student to submit an essay to describe their goals and volunteer work. Valerio stresses that the key is to not delay the process and to apply before the deadline.
Silva encouraged her peers to take a look at the scholarships and see if any might be a fit.
“They’re there for people to apply for,” said Silva. “It’s worth it to at least take a look at the different scholarships Humber offers.”
