Jesse Major graduated from Humber College’s Fitness and Health Promotion program during the COVID-19 pandemic, unsure what would come next.
“It was pretty scary not knowing what was going to happen. I lost a lot of weight and was having a really rough time, feeling like there’s no hope,” he said.
“But I was able to practice mindfulness and breathing techniques and that helped me get through and the days eventually got better.”
Major figured there must be other people struggling the way he was, and they could benefit from mindfulness techniques and other wellness practices. He searched for wellness coaching programs but didn’t have to look far. He applied to Humber’s Wellness Coach Ontario Graduate Certificate program. Jesse was accepted and enrolled this fall.
Major won the #HumberAccepted contest and received a MacBook Air, which only makes him more excited and motivated to pursue his goals in the months to come.
The contest was open to newly accepted applicants who shared their excitement by posting a picture or video of their “I’m in!” postcard or acceptance for the Fall 2021 intake on Instagram or Twitter, tagging #HumberAccepted and following @HumberCollege.
The Wellness Coach program is delivered online, which suits Major. It’s easier for him to brainstorm and share ideas with classmates in the Blackboard Ultra chat function than in a traditional classroom.
He hopes to set up a wellness coaching practice when he graduates.
“I want to help people get the wellness back from what they’ve lost during the pandemic,” said Major.
Not that he’s waiting for graduation to start helping – Major also runs a blog where he shares tips and resources for people interested in, or struggling with, their mental wellness. Find him on Instagram at @jesses_mentalhealth_journey.
Applicants for the winter and summer 2022 terms are still eligible to enter the #HumberAccepted contest for a chance to win a MacBook Air. Details can be found at humber.ca/accepted/contest-rules.html.
