TORONTO, ONTARIO –Mark Cameron, a paramedic, educator, humanitarian, and a graduate of Humber College’s Paramedic program (1989), has been appointed as a member of the Order of Canada (CM).
Cameron's 35-year career has been dedicated to saving lives both in Canada and internationally. His efforts include providing emergency care in Syria, where he risked his own life. He was honoured with the Governor General’s Medal of Bravery for rescuing a child trapped in farm machinery in the region.
“Receiving the Order of Canada acknowledges my work while highlighting the collective efforts of an extensive team of dedicated professionals who work alongside me,” says Cameron. “It puts our mission and achievements on the map, and I am grateful to be recognized with this honour."
The Order of Canada is one of the country’s highest civilian honours, recognizing outstanding achievement, dedication to the community, and service to the nation.
As the founder and co-president of the Canadian International Medical Relief Organization (CIMRO), Cameron leads efforts to deliver urgent medical relief to injured children and civilians in countries such as Syria, Guyana, and Ukraine. CIMRO’s impactful work includes helping to eradicate a polio outbreak in Syria by distributing 1.4 million vaccines to children.
“Humber has the best paramedic program in Canada,” said Cameron. “When I was vaccinating children in a warzone, it was that same Humber experience that taught me to push through the challenges and find solutions. Our instructors would challenge us with real-world scenarios, like pulling patients out of ravines or performing procedures under difficult conditions. This 'figure it out and get it done' approach has been invaluable throughout my career.”
Cameron now imparts his knowledge as the Program Lead for the Sunnybrook Advanced Life Support Education in Toronto. He has also taught at Centennial College, Humber College, Michener Institute and Stony Brook University in the United States. CIMRO, a medical education company, has delivered training on every continent, except Antarctica. He recently co-authored research examining war trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder in children in active war zones. Cameron was also recognized with a 2022 Premier’s Award In the Health Sciences category.
