Accessing Student Progress and Performance Data in Blackboard Ultra

Now, at around the 2nd and 3rd week of the semester, it is crucial to reach out to students to ensure that they are staying engaged in your course. If students aren’t logging into Blackboard and are missing deadlines, these students may be at risk, and we have an opportunity to help them. There are two main ways for instructors (with the ‘Instructor’ role in a Blackboard Ultra Course) to access data about a student’s progression, including their login and deadline adherence information through a Blackboard Ultra Course;

  1. The Course Activity Report,
  2. The Student Activity Details Report.

Course Activity Report

The Course Activity Report is easily accessible for instructors. This report provides insights into student engagement and performance within the course. This report will allow you to:

  • Identify struggling students based on their overall grade,
  • students missing their due dates,
  • the number of hours students have spent in your course,
  • the number of days since their last access,
  • and you can even set alerts to alert you if your students are falling behind with the points above.

Accessing the Course Activity Report

You can learn more about Tracking Student Progress using the Course Activity Report here, or you can find more detailed information about these reports from Anthology’s Blackboard Help website here.

Student Activity Details Report

In addition to the Course Activity Report, instructors also have access to the Student Activity Details Report. This report offers a more individualized view of student activities, allowing you to:

  • Identify struggling students, students who are improving over time, or students whose grades are trending downwards.
  • Message students to reach out to them for support, if needed.
  • Download line charts of student activity data as a PDF or image, or the chart view as a .csv file to share information as needed.

If you notice that a student has not been active in your course for over 10-15 days, or has missed 2 or more deadlines, consider reaching out to them using the following message:

“Hello! I am your instructor, (your name here), and I wanted to reach out to you because you haven’t been in Blackboard in some time and engaging on Blackboard and in class is vital to your academic success. If you need to learn more about Blackboard, consider playing Blackboard Quest! It’s a gamified learning experience to help you learn how to navigate through Blackboard; it will only take about 30 minutes to 1 hour. I also recognize that there are a lot of external factors that can make engaging with course content difficult. There are a lot of supports out there:

If you’re looking for learning support:

If you’re looking for financial supports and resources:

If you’re looking for support with housing:

If you’re unsafe and/or feeling unsafe:

If you’re looking for support with your health and well-being (including mental health):

If you’re looking for support with an disability related academic accommodation:

If you’re looking for support for Indigenous Education:

These and all other student supports, services, and community information can be found at www.wegotyou.humber.ca. I hope to hear from and see you soon!”
