Setting Up The Classroom For Better Learning In Sustainability

Helping learners develop a sustainability mindset isn’t just about what is taught in class. It’s also about the environment that you create in the classroom – either physically or virtually.

A basic human need is a sense of belonging (Strayhorn, 2016, 2019). For students, a sense of belonging includes “social supports on campus, whether they feel connected to the campus, classrooms and instructors as well to other students and how they experience mattering” (Teaching for Belonging, p.19). Instruction that fosters belonging for better learning outcomes includes:

Text on a chalkboard: '1. Students seeing self in classroom 2. Feedback to promote higher student self-worth 3. Increase student engagement with learning '
