An exhibit challenging myths about people with disabilities is on display at Humber Lakeshore’s L Space Gallery.
Spina bifida is a birth defect that occurs when a baby’s spine doesn’t form normally.
“For the first time in my artistic practice, I am examining how people like me, who live with this condition, view themselves and seek to claim their power and beauty,” Kean explains.
“Many people living with (spina bifida) share the experience of having been at a clinic being looked at by doctors, nurses and therapists. Imagine being on a stretcher, nearly nude, being talked about like you aren’t in the room. This portrait project is a collaboration between me and the people I photograph. They are as much in control of the final portraits as me.”
The L Space Gallery is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
