This summer, Kiki Oresegun, a Bachelor of Commerce – Marketing student, has a lot to celebrate. After receiving the Longo Family Diversity Scholarship in Small Business Entrepreneurship and the Employability Experience Fund, Oresegun attended the Longo Be Your Own Boss (BYOB) Video Pitch Competition on April 10, 2025, where she shared how the scholarship supported her studies. It was there that she met Mike Longo, Chief Operating Officer at Longo’s, and applied for and landed her dream summer job: a digital marketing internship at the very company that had awarded her the scholarship.

“I love the job—it’s exactly what I signed up for,” says Oresegun, who adds that the experience has deepened her interest in digital content creation. “Not only do I get to show my creativity, but I also get to help the company. That’s exactly how I hoped this internship would go.”

Oresegun is especially proud of a recent project in which she created script templates for social media. “One of my posts actually got around 10,000 views and 1,000 comments. Compared to other posts, this one really stood out.”

Working at Longo’s truly feels like being part of a family, she says. “They’re so nice – from the support center to the distribution center to the stores – you get the same energy and feeling where everyone treats you like family.”

Oresegun credits her recent success to the scholarships she received over the past year. “I was able to focus more of my time on both school and my small business”—a baking company she launched called EKOs. “I’m not only doing what I love, but I also have time I can give back to myself. I don’t have to constantly be looking for another job or falling behind in school because I’m working too much.”

The Longo Family Scholarship Program in Small Business Entrepreneurship is a scholarship offered by the Longo Family Foundation to students at Humber Polytechnic’s Longo Faculty of Business. The scholarship is part of a broader initiative by the Longo Family Foundation to foster entrepreneurship at Humber.

This fall, scholarship applications will be accepted from August 5 to September 21, 2025. Scholarships are awarded based on a variety of criteria, from academic merit to community involvement and leadership. Hundreds of scholarships are available this fall, valued at $1,000 or more. These scholarships are made possible thanks to Humber’s community of donors and alumni, including faculty and staff who donate through Humber Gives or work with the Humber’s Advancement and Alumni team.

When asked for one piece of advice to students who are considering applying, Oresegun said: “Apply, apply, apply. Don’t talk yourself out of something that could be really great for you. If I hadn’t applied for a scholarship, I wouldn’t have had the chance to apply for my internship either. It’s about taking risks and putting yourself out there,” she says. “In the end, it could be the best choice you’ve ever made.”
