    Course Description

    Students enrolled in this course are assigned the role of business manager, and are responsible for acquiring the knowledge, skills, and attributes necessary for success in business. Students will participate in a business simulation where they will experience the challenges of managing a small business in a competitive environment. Throughout the simulation, students will examine what managers do to establish and achieve business goals, and the interrelationship between functional areas within the organization. Beyond business concepts, students will develop an important foundation of professional behaviours necessary to manage their own success. Students will grow their confidence and ability to work effectively in groups, take ownership of their learning, manage their time, practice effective communication skills, and develop and deliver purposeful business presentations. The essential business skills, knowledge, and behaviours developed throughout this course will establish the foundation of future academic success, while preparing students for the professional demands of a career in business.

    Course Rationale

    The purpose of this course is to offer a foundational level of many learning outcomes that will lead to proficiency in senior level courses as the student progresses through their program. In addition, students will develop important study and self-management skills that will be beneficial as they advance through senior level courses and into future employment opportunities.

              • Students will be introduced to a business simulation where they launch and manage on a weekly basis, an independent coffee shop. The team will make weekly collaborative decisions over a 9 week period, analyzing data provided by simulation results to make continual improvements to their teams success. At the end of the 9 week decision intervals, the team will develop a business presentation recapping their simulation strategy, results, what worked and what did not work, as well as opportunities for next time.
              • Each team of students participating in the business simulation will be graded based on performance against specific, real-world business measures: profit contribution, brand awareness, customer satisfaction, and others. Normally student teams will receive a grade based on their rank relative to competing teams at the end of the 9 week interval. The presentation will enable teams to prepare a collaborative presentation and deliver same in a live setting to their classmates

              • Students get introduced to an interactive e-book that contains all of the main lessons in the course.               • Students get placed in teams at the beginning of the course in order to make weekly group decisions for a business simulation as well as for completing team exercises based on the simulation or the weekly lesson content. Students are provided with a professional success self-learning module that contains a section on Participating in Teams to Achieve Results section to support their learning in how best to work in a team setting
