Introduction to Universal Design for Learning

Course Code: UDLE 100

This micro-credential introduces the universal design for learning (UDL) framework, exploring the history, evolution, rationale and goals of UDL. Participants will consider the adult learning experience through an exploration of andragogy, learner variability and learner-centered design theory. This micro-credential is a great initial launching point for educators who are new(er) to UDL and eager to begin implementing it into practice. Upon successful completion, learners will be able to:

  • Describe the rationale, goals, and general structure of the UDL guidelines.
  • Reflect on the impact inclusive design can have on the experience of all learners.
  • Apply a design-based rather than learner-deficit approach to defining and minimizing barriers.
  • Apply Knowles’ Theory of Andragogy during the learning design process to meet the needs of adult learners.
  • Acknowledge the value of addressing learner variability and honouring learner identities during the learning design process.
  • Develop a plan for implementing UDL into teaching practice using the Plus One method.
