Adding, Removing or Extending Access to Individuals in a Blackboard Course with the Help of the Innovative Learning Support Centre

What are the Blackboard Administrative Requests that I can make through the Innovative Learning Support Centre?

Through the Innovative Learning Support Centre, there are 3 main administrative requests within Blackboard that you can make. These requests require Associate Dean (or Manager/Director) approval, so please ensure that your management is aware of these requests, as they will be asked to approve it.

  1. Merging Course Sections in Blackboard
    • The process of linking two or more course sections (referred to as child courses) into one centralized parent course (referred to as an XL site) in Blackboard. Instructors manage all content and students in the XL site, while students still see their original child courses and have access to the shared content within the XL site.
  2. Adding, Removing or Extending access to Individuals from a Course
    • In Blackboard, there are a variety of defined user-types, including; the ‘Instructor’ role that has full access to the course, the ‘Course Builder’ role that can manage content (except grades/Gradebook), the ‘Student’ role for viewing content, and the ‘Student Support’ role for mirroring Student for accessibility needs.
    • Learn more about this below!
  3. Requesting a Blackboard Course from the Innovative Learning Support Centre
    • In Blackboard, instructors and staff can request different types of courses, including XL (cross-listed), PMR, ADR, FAC, DEVU, and SBX, each designed for specific purposes like development of course content, discovering Blackboard features, or training, with defined storage limits and access durations.

What roles can be added or removed from a course?

The following is a table that describes the different roles that can be added or removed from a course in Blackboard:

Role Access Level Key Limitations
Instructor Full control: create, edit, grade, and manage the course. Must be added by faculty scheduler (not IL Support).
Course Builder Can create and manage most content even if course is unavailable. Cannot access gradebook or create graded activities; cannot remove instructors.
Student Default role; can view content and participate in activities. Cannot edit or create content.
Student Support Same as Student; used for accessibility or extra support. No additional permissions beyond Student role.

Please note: Adding users as an instructor to the current semester live course needs to be completed by the department scheduler and not the IL form.

When would I submit this LMS request?

  • When a user would like access to a Blackboard course/site, or
  • When a user would like to be removed from a Blackboard course/site, or
  • When a user would like to extend the access of a Blackboard site past the typical 2-week period after the Banner-set course end date, typically for accessibility or at the request of a PC or AD.
    • Please note: Requesting an ‘Extend Access’ will extend the access to all users in the requested Blackboard course.

How do I request the adding, removing or extending of access to an individual in Blackboard?

  1. Have the email address of your Associate Dean who will approve your request ready.
  2. Locate CRN, course code, and section of the courses you want to add, remove or extend access to individuals to.
  3. Please have the name and Humber username (ex.: smithz, n01234567, or bcdf1234) of users you are hoping to add, remove or extend access to.
  4. Complete the LMS Blackboard Ultra Admin Request form on the Innovative Learning Support Centre website to request the addition, removal or extension of access.
