Every November, Humber Polytechnic celebrates Indigenous Education Month, a time dedicated to recognizing and honouring Indigenous cultures, histories, stories, and contributions. Throughout the month, a variety of events and workshops are held both on and off campus, offering opportunities for learning, engagement, and community building. These events include guest lectures, cultural performances, and interactive sessions that highlight Indigenous perspectives, voices, and knowledge. The highlight of the month is the Indigenous Knowledges Gathering (IKG), a major event that brings together students, faculty, support staff, administrators, and community members to share and celebrate Indigenous ways of being, knowing, relating, and doing.
Indigneous Knowledges Gathering
Beginning in 2014 with a vision to unite Indigenous students, educators, and communities, the Indigenous Knowledges Gathering (IKG) has embraced the transfer of Indigenous knowledge, celebrating and sharing innovative practices in Indigenous education. IKG features a diverse range of activities, from panel discussions and hands-on workshops to keynote presentations, bringing together Knowledge Holders, Elders, scholars, students, and communities. These gatherings provide a platform to share successes, address challenges, discuss strategies, and explore future directions in Indigenous education.
Since its inception, IKG has grown from 120 participants in 2014 to over 1,600 participants in recent years, thanks to the introduction of livestream viewing. It is renowned for its innovative content, networking opportunities, and community-friendly atmosphere.
IKG offers an incredible opportunity to:
- Learn about Indigenous ways of being, knowing, relating, and doing.
- Consider wise practices and develop strategies for building more responsive educational policies, systems, and practices.
- Examine emerging challenges impacting Indigenous students.
- Engage in hands-on cultural teachings and workshops.
- Shape the future of post-secondary education
