Every November is Indigenous Education Month. There are various on-campus and off-campus events and workshops throughout the month. The major event that takes place every November at Humber is the Indigenous Knowledges Gathering.
Indigneous Knowledges Gathering
Beginning in 2014 as a vision to bring Indigenous students, educators, and communities together, the Indigenous Knowledges Gathering (IKG) embraced Indigenous knowledge transfer, celebrating and sharing innovative practices in the field of Indigenous education. From panel discussions to hands-on workshops and keynote presentations, IKG brings together a diverse range of Knowledge Holders, Elders, scholars, students and communities to share the successes, challenges, strategies and possible future directions of Indigenous education. Growing from 120 participants in 2014, to 1600+ participants in recent years due to the introduction of livestream viewing, IKG is well known for its innovative content, networking opportunities, and community-friendly atmosphere.
IKG provides an amazing opportunity to:
- learn about Indigenous ways of being, knowing, relating and doing;
- consider wise practices and develop strategies for building more responsive educational policies, systems, and practices;
- examine emerging challenges impacting Indigenous students;
- engage in hands-on cultural teachings and workshops; and, shape the future of post-secondary education.

Treaties Recognition Week
Treaties Recognition Week honours the importance of treaties and increases awareness of the treaty relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples and communities in Ontario. It is a week of activities whose purpose is to help Ontario students and residents understand the significance of treaty rights and treaty relationships. It is important to understand that treaties still have relevance for all people living in Canada today.
Here are three resources that you can access to extend your knowledge on treaties in Canada:
- Treaty Rights and Relationships: Explore books on treaties and treaty relationships in this featured library reading list.
- Treaties Recognition Week Website: View a more comprehensive collection of library resources and websites covering Treaty Relationships, Treaty Lands, Two-Row-Wampum and more.
- Discover Treaties using The Maamwi Hub: Use open access resources, websites and videos from The Maamwi Hub in your classroom and beyond, related to historical and modern treaties, treaty agreements, and more.
Treaties Week 2023
Treaties Week falls within Indigenous Education Month and Indigenous Education & Engagement would like to use this important recognition week as an opportunity to advance the overall understanding of treaties that exist across Turtle Island. With neighboring internal partners such as the Humber Libraries, the Department of Sustainability and Humber Government Relations, Marketing and Communications Department, we teamed up to show the Humber community what treaties mean to each individual. On November 6th, 2023 Humber hosted an Indigenous Marketplace and Services Fair to provide a glimpse into Indigenous ways. We invited the Humber community to join us at North Campus to support Indigenous vendors, learn about treaties and reflect on their roles as treaty people.
