Part I.
Rationale for the
EDI Toolkit

  • Prevalence of oppression, exclusion and discrimination
  • Educators, usually without realizing it, perpetuate and/or reinforce oppression
  • December 2020 Human Rights Commission letter:
    • Raised human rights concerns regarding toxic learning environments
    • Placed the Ontario post-secondary sector on notice that inappropriate actions will not be tolerated

Rationale for the
EDI Toolkit

  • With respect to race, gender, sexual orientation, language, religion, social class etc., there is an incredibly diverse community of learners at Humber
  • A learning context wherein diverse populations are regularly encouraged to work collaboratively, calls for particular attention to EDI

Diversity at
Humber

  • Regardless of one’s intentions and motivations, we are all socialized into a culture grounded in colonialism, white supremacy, heteropatriarchy, ableism and Christianity
  • Thus, we all hold hidden biases
  • One of the goals of this toolkit is to uncover these biases so we can manage how they show up unintentionally in our practices
