Foundations of Everyday Spanish

Certificate of Completion

Program Code: SPAH

Spanish is the second most spoken language worldwide, with approximately 448 million speakers. The Foundations of Everyday Spanish Certificate provides a solid foundation in Spanish and helps develop conversational skills for travel, business, and social interactions. Our courses focus on comprehension, expression, vocabulary, and grammar, incorporating cultural insights from Spanish-speaking countries. The hybrid format offers flexibility for learning core concepts, a supportive learning community, and live practice sessions. By the end of the program, learners will reach A2 level in the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) framework.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the certificate, students will be able to:

  • Greet people, introduce themselves and others, and exchange basic personal information.
  • Describe people, places, routines, and simple actions in everyday life.
  • Discuss a wide range of familiar topics.
  • Ask and answer questions about everyday activities, preferences, and needs, past and future events, and invitations.
  • Give simple instructions, suggestions, express agreement, and give opinions and reasons.
  • Interact in familiar situations like travel, dining, and leisure activities.

Language Equivalancy

This certificate is equivalent to the A2 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) level 4.

Method of Delivery

This program will be offered through both synchronous and asynchronous delivery modes. Learners will meet their instructor weekly for a live 2-hour interactive synchronous session. In addition, learners will also engage in asynchronous learning.

Spanish Placement Test

The placement test was designed to help you informally assess your Spanish language proficiency to gain a better idea of which course to begin your Spanish studies. If you have no previous Spanish language experience, you are welcome to take the test but should register for SPAH 100 - Foundational Spanish 1. The placement test focuses on knowledge of basic grammatical structures; it does not evaluate oral and written skills. The placement test contains 50 multiple-choice questions. It is recommended that you take the test without the use of any study aids to obtain a more accurate result. Take the Spanish placement test now.

Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR)

Learners with prior learning in the Spanish language as confirmed from the placement test may be eligible for a course credit in recognition of their prior learning. The placement test will indicate the recommended Spanish course that learners should register into. If the placement test recommends that a learner starts the certificate at the second course (SHAH 101) or the third course (SPAH 102), then the learner can apply for a PLAR for the first course (and possibly the second course). The learner should first register for the recommended course after taking the placement test, then send an email to cplliberalarts@humber.ca to apply for the PLAR. There is a fee of $86 per course associated with the application for PLAR.
