Art Description (What inspired you to create the artwork?) | I moved to Toronto as an international student in the first week of September, 2022. The first month was difficult for me especially housing. After spending a whole month as a paying guest, in the first week of October I moved into a basement that place was a wreck. Nonetheless, I was happy to call that little claustrophobic space my home. By the end of October I got used to the daily grind and have developed myself a routine and stuck to it. Visiting the nearby park was one of the major outings I'd look forward to every evening, especially during the sunsets. Moving to a different country, leaving behind thirty years of my life, my family and friends back in my home country to chase my dreams came with hint of loneliness, agony, pain and a lot of hope. The picture I've submitted for this competition is a self portrait during my first visit to the park on the Thirtieth Street, on a bright sunny day. It was around 5 in the evening I shot that picture which kinda tells what I was going through metaphorically. For me that picture talks about me trying to hide my face in a new country while trying to belong/adapt to the new environment. The shadow of me represents my presence without a face surrounded by the newness that I'm still trying to adapt to. That's that. |
