Art Description (What inspired you to create the artwork?) |
This piece is a cyanotype self portrait using an image I photographed on my film camera. I was inspired and intrigued to use cyanotypes after learning about anthotypes and how natural photography processes work. I chose to do an image of me staring directly into the camera and the viewer as my work tends to focus on portraits of black women and the black gaze. Black people are often viewed from lenses and there have been many accounts in my life where I have been confronted by stares ad glares from society just for simply existing as a black woman. This piece is meant to challenge the viewer as they think they are looking at my self portrait, but really, I am the one holding the power staring back at them. |
