Seeding the Roots of Sustainability
Humber College is located within the traditional and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit. Known as Adoobiigok [A-doe-bee-goke], the “Place of the Black Alders” in Michi Saagiig [Mi-Chee Saw-Geeg] language, the region is uniquely situated along Humber River Watershed, which historically provided an integral connection for Anishinaabe [Ah-nish-nah-bay], Haudenosaunee [Hoeden-no-shownee], and Wendat [Wine-Dot] peoples between the Ontario Lakeshore and the Lake Simcoe/Georgian Bay regions. Now home to people of numerous nations, Adoobiigok continues to provide a vital source of interconnection for all.
Acknowledging the land on which Humber sits as Indigenous peoples, who are disproportionally impacted by climate change, have been and continue to be caretakers of Mother Earth and respect her many gifts. We must all continue to learn, build relationships, and acting in with solidarity with Indigenous communities around the world.
Our Culture
Whether it’s embedding sustainability across curriculum, enhancing how we help connect people to nature or building net-zero buildings, every act supports sustainable behaviour that changes culture. Our community will have a profound effect on our success to reach the Sustainable Development Goals, address the climate crisis, and shape a thriving culture of sustainability and inclusion. Demonstrating allyship with our local and global community partners and collaborating on each of our strategic priorities, will lead the way to a more sustainable world together.
Campus Culture is the personality of an organization, shaped by the institutional history, mission, physical settings, norms, values, practices, and assumptions that guide behaviour of individuals and groups in the institution.
Humber Sustainability Steering Committee
The Sustainability Steering Committee (SSC) is a cross-institutional advisory body to the President and Executive Team that provides integrated, collaborative, evidence-based advice to ensure Humber’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in planning and decision-making across the college. It is responsible for providing advice and direction related to the execution of Humber’s Sustainability Plan. Sustainability Ambassadors
Sustainability Ambassadors is the volunteer program offered by the Office of Sustainability that provides Humber and Guelph Humber students the opportunity to stengthen their skillset, make connections with one another, and earn Co-Curricular Record (CCR) Credit. By joining this community of passionate sustainability advocates at Humber, students support our events, write blog posts, create content for our social media, and much more. The Sustainability Trail is a series of plaques featuring sustainability initiatives across the North and Lakeshore campuses. Our Community
Our work leverages our partners’ strengths and we encourage you to learn more about the following catalysts that help shape our culture. Together, we have shared goals which include everything from establishing an institutional Equity, Diversity and Inclusion framework to hosting workshops on environmental racism, and conducting an annual Sustainability Culture Assessment.
